Coaching in 09
Im not going to sit here and bash Herm, frankly i dont have the energy for it, and plenty of others have already taken care of it.
Im not too sure what to think about the coaching situation...as much as i dont want to say it, it would be meaningless to fire herm 5 games into the season. Herm like Croyle have 11 games to prove why they deserve to be here. Herm has done some good things this year youth movement and actually stuck to it which includes our great draft! (but on the other hand why do you have Mcgraw getting playing time over Morgan, sackintosh over richardson or taylor)
There plenty of things to say about the chiefs this year but, like i said for me this guys got the rest of the year to turn it around and prove he should be here
I didnt know whether or not Mike Holgrem is retiring but his contract is up in Seattle
or possibly the raiders coach that got fired Lane Kiflin(however thats spelled) According to what ive heard players really like him and he was starting to make progress in oaktown, but was cut short, well you know the story.
Who do you think would be good canidates to help this team?

Good Thoughts
Holmgren is supposedly taking a sabbatical after this year. He hasn’t committed to coming back one way or the other. Lane Kfifin is likely headed for a college job.
I think Herm will be around for another year barring 11 more games like last week (which is a possibility).

I like the Kiffin idea. I think I suggested it before he was even fired. Truthfully though I think the problem is with the GM and I think our new Gm should pick the new coach.

Kiffin
Is a possible candidate for Syracuse.

Not likely
Al Davis pumps a lot of money into that university.

Does He?
I know he’s an alumnus, but is he a donor?

Yes
Can’t confirm but I’ve read it along several scout pages. Will post if I can find a definitive source.

Somewhat confirmed
I emailed a former executive of the Raiders who told me he knew he was a big donor to Syracuse but isn’t sure about currently.

Cowher or Billick
Both of those guys tend to build through the draft and get all they that they can out of their players.

I think we have to talk GM first
If Carl and Herm are gone, if, then I think we need a Parcells style takeover with all of the new GM’s people brought in. Who doesn’t think that Sparano in Miami is not doing a good job already? Parcells kept no semblance of the old regime at all, and the previous coach for the Dolphins had only been there a year. If we are going to change, start at the top, and then do not handicap them with other peoples coaches or philosophies. Then if it doesn’t work you can not blame it on the circumstances. Like “Herm was saddled with Vermeil’s old tired players” etc. It will all be on the new staff.

I agree. In reality we are in the same boat, or maybe a little bit better situation (depending on how this season ends) than the dolphins were last year.

I don't know
I can’t see blowing it all up and starting all over again. What if the players don’t fit with your new coach/GM’s schemes? Patience is a virtue! Let Herm Build it first he’s barely half done in my opinion!

Honestly, I think most of our news players
would fit in any system. We are already looking at getting a new QB ( don’t get mad you Croyle defenders!) and that is the most critical position to learn a new system. How entrenched are we into any system that it would even matter anyway? There are a lot of young talented players on this team, but you can tell the lack of talent as well. 3 years from now a lot of the players currently on the roster will not be here. Only the core players that we want to build around will still be here. If we bring in a new GM and staff next year, go a little more aggressive after some free agents like Miami did to feel the holes, we will not lose a lot of ground. When you have a team this bad, it just can’t get any worse. Can it?

Agreed
Nobody’s likely dumping Albert, Dorsey, Pollard, or Page. They’ll likely adapt. The Brandons, DJ, and any linemen who can show some signs of life will probably be fine too. The guys who’ll get shipped out first are likely going to be the vets who aren’t part of the long-term future and who are either done with their contracts or who won’t cripple our cap space in a trade (so probably Waters, Boone, the Edwardses, Harris, McIntosh, Huard, Jones). We’re not going to be gutting the team, because the young core will still be there because most of those players are probably adaptable to other systems.

It is possible that
the new GM would favor zone blocking and or a similiar pro style offense. If it is someone like Pioli, he would go after players they like, but he would look at the collection of players and try to tailor something to their strengths. Sorry, way too much speculation. It is up to Clark. I think we will have a good idea around week 9, 10, 11 where we are at as a team and what direction we will need to go.

I Do, Actually
I honestly believe that he will not tolerate the current rebuilding plan if there’s not some serious improvement this year. He actually said so explicitly this summer and I’m completely willing to take him at his word.

So whats the solution?
I’m for Cowher, but do you think he will take the job? And would he convert to a 3-4 because we definitely don’t have the personal for that. Who do we hire for the GM job?
by chiefsfan1384 on Oct 8, 2008 11:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That is the million dollar question!
Cowher would make us all feel good again, No doubt it would be easy to get on that bandwagon. UC has looked at a lot of GM candidates and might have response to that…

Hasn't Been A Lot :)
I’ve only mentioned two, Scott Pioli and Martin Mayhew. The head of player personnel for Green Bay looked kind of interesting, but I’d have to do more digging. Unfortunately there’s not an equivalent to Pro Football Reference for GM candidates. :)

Why not bring in Jimmy Johnson and place him into a similiar position as Parcells in Miami?
Jimmy’s philosophy of team chemistry fits already what we have in place. Big O-line, power running game, a 4-3 defense. Lets not bring in a GM/ Coach who’s gonna have a different philosophy than the players we already have.
Everywhere Parcells has gone (Giants, New England, Jets, Dallas, Miami) he’s made the team better, and so has Jimmy (Dallas & Miami). I think these guys enjoy the building process more than the daily demands of coaching full time. I don’t know, just thinking aloud.

The coach is just a symptom
Peterson will probably try to save his job this offseason by sacking Herm and hiring a new coach and giving him a multi-year contract. That would be disastrous though, despite the fact that Herm is horrible, because Peterson can’t find a good coach and bringing in some new guy would buy him more years. “give the new guy a chance, he just got here we can’t change now! Blah blah blah blah.” Peterson is the root of the problems, he can’t be allowed more time to damage things more.
He used to be a good GM, but his time has passed and both parties need to move on. Letting him hire a new coach would be like being married to someone who is horrible for you but instead of breaking up with them you have another child with them to “save the marriage.”

If Clark cares about the Organization AND THE FANS
He will not let Herm or Carl rob the franchise of the salary cap money available now and waste another Draft. I’m not saying we haven’t had bad drafts the last two to three years, I would hate to see us trade picks away thinking we could bring in a savior free agent to resurrect the teams winning ways.
I would be OK with a guy like Kiffin only if the right man was behind him as GM and/or we were able to land a football mind similar to Parcells, either as GM or as Dir of Personnel.

I don't see the present rebuilding effort
throwing ANY draft picks away.
One of the reasons we left so much room in the Salary Cap.
