Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

On Monday, I heard a lot of commentary from radio yakkers and e-mailers about the lack of effort they sensed from the Chiefs on Sunday in Charlotte.

That’s crap. There was plenty of effort. That’s what makes the whole thing so frustrating to the players and coaches. Their horrible performance didn’t come because they weren’t playing hard on Sunday.

So what Bob is saying

Is that they just plain suck?

It's Funny

Right after the game Gretz write a column saying how the Chiefs played like a team that had been put together from guys stumbling around in the parking lot who’d been given a five minute primer on how to play football (which is as damning an indictment of coaching as you can make), then he says that the coaching staff put out a full effort in gameplanning for Carolina, then he says that maybe the players didn’t prepare as seriously during practice as they should have (which is also largely a responsibility of the coaching staff).

So which is it, Bob? Did they try or did they just half-ass it? Because from the remarks made by coaches and players after the game it sounds a lot like the people in charge half-assed it…which also seems to be a habitual pattern in the Chiefs these days.

I wonder if Gretz ever hates himself for having to be a shill for a management team as blatantly terrible as what the Chiefs have?

If You're Referring To Bowe

That looked more like a miscommunication of routes between the QB and WR than a lack of effort on Bowe’s part.

reasonable people can disagree

hell, I don’t think Huard gave full effort eithre

by sm7600 on Oct 7, 2008 1:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I Think He Gave A Full Effort On That Play

It looked like a timing route and the ball went to about where Bowe would have been if he hadn’t cut his route early. That just seemed like a miscommunication to me…Huard thought Bowe was going deep, Bowe thought it was a pass underneath the coverage. Happens.

Of course Carolina had that covered well enough that it might have been picked off even if Bowe had kept running.

It's possible that it was a full effort from players

and a half ass effort from the staff.

That's What I'm Sensing With This Season

I don’t think the Chiefs players are actually this talentless. But I do think that the coaching staff (primarily the head coach) has no idea how to use the talent that’s available.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

I agree

I honestly believe that if Jeff Fisher or Bill Belichek was our coach, we are a 8-8 to 10-6 team. That’s why every night I pray before I go to bed that we get rid of our GM and Herm and go in the right direction.

by CBaller13 on Oct 7, 2008 1:12 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I keep hoping the same thing.

We should not be this bad. There is no reason, these players have all played the game before. It comes down to the person in charge of putting the best product on the field.

Man

I’m not really seeing the talent you guys are. Sure there are some players that look promising on plays once in awhile, but overall there is too much inconsistency and outright terrible play from the most important position – QB to even consider being a 8-8 team.

I phrased that poorly

I mean there is inconsistency everywhere on this team, in addition to outright terrible play at QB. Kerry Collins has a really good team surrounding him. Our awful QBs have a below average to awful team around them.

If we had Brett Favre I think we would still struggle to finish 8-8.

Because

we would have 20 INT’s a game.

Like the Packers did in...

2005 (4-12) or 2006 (8-8)?

Also, I think if we had a decent RG and RT and a Middle Lineback that was as good as Nap Harris was supposed to be, Peter King would be calling Brodie Croyle nightly to hear his opinions on newly released movies, or Damon Huard would be the old man miracle walker/worker (2006?), or even Tyler Thigpen might be a real up n’ comer! (nah)…

The point is O-line, O-line, O-line, whah? oh yeah, STFU! O-line!

They lack discipline!

The Panthers beat us severely by simply out ‘football playing’ us. Our O-line didn’t cover their gaps, thanks MacInsuck, the DE’s didn’t contain and got burnt on draw plays. That touchdown run up the gut was a total defensive communication failure, and generally each play you could see the progression of the play follow the Panther’s blocking scheme. Meanwhile our secondary, the one place we’re developing ahead of schedule had their hands more than full with Smith and Muhammad all day.

Normally, we’d blame Bowe over Huard for that int because Huard’s a veteran, but he was so weary at that point, and because we’re suspect Bowe would ever mishear a stop route over a deep route, that coulda gone either way.

Poor mental discipline.

Stuck in Traffic

I can be angry and honk and try to cut people off, or I can wait calmly.

I know I’m in the minority, but I’m willing to give Croyle longer to see if he stays healthy and improves.

I’m also willing to wait until the end of the season to call it a total failure.

I expect to see wild variations in play this season. We’ll do well at times and awfully at others.

The trade deadline is passing, I don’t honestly believe Carl or Herm will be canned mid-season (nor do I think they should).

If week 16 comes and goes and this team is in the state it is now, there is obviously a problem. If this team alternates performances like it did between Denver and Carolina, there is less of a problem. This team needs to show a trend of improvement over the course of the season. Five games (4 1/2 without the starting QB) isn’t enough to draw conclusions.

by NJChiefsFan on Oct 7, 2008 2:14 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Question

Since Herm doesn’t use the internet or watch the Super Bowl, does that mean he doesn’t watch game tapes either? Does he purely go off his live experiences? I just wish I could follow a day in the life of Herm during the regular season or understand why he does what he does. I mean the guy can’t be that stupid. I don’t understand his logic whatsoever.

Interesting

Was there an SBN Jets site up during Herm’s last year with the Jets? I would love to see the comments and compare them with ours this year.

About 50/50

with the people I talk to around here.

The guys that hate him aren’t afraid to express their opinion.

Others think he had a bum deal with all of the injuries his teams had to overcome.

by NJChiefsFan on Oct 7, 2008 2:36 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmmm.

History seems to repeat itself with Herm.

Just something I stumbled across, in 2005, the Jets lost to the Panthers 30-3 in November.

Jets fans

I haven’t talked to one that has anything good to say about Herm. Qb’s are doomed under Herm and his teams seem to historically get worse.

by cmpotter on Oct 7, 2008 2:43 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No one I've talked to loved him,

but not everyone thinks he killed their team.

by NJChiefsFan on Oct 7, 2008 2:47 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There are still people

who think he will be good for this team. The thing is both teams he has been the head of got worse.

Nah

They just brought it back recently.

Bob Gretz going out of his way to defend the Chiefs at all costs?

I’ve heard it all. Gretz is a clown with no credibility. Hopefully, he is run out of town with Herm and Carl.
