Something that Scares Me
The Defensive Lines play has been abysmal this season. This scares me because although a lot of area of our team have been ignored, that has not been the case with the defensive line. It seems like they are getting man handled out there. What the hell is going on? Granted 3 of our 4 starters are starting for the first time and Hali has switched sides, but you would think that they would be getting more push on the line of scrimmage. I don't even care about the pass rush, I care about stopping the run. What does a pass rush matter if we can't stop the ground game. Do you guys think this is the result of immaturity or lack of talent? Meaning, do we have potential talent or are we doomed? Historically, most defensive lineman suck their first year starting. Look at Mario Williams.

lack of pass rush doesn't help
Dorsey and sometimes Tank are both getting double teamed on the inside on most plays while even with one on one matchups Hali and Turk don’t seem to be getting any sort of rush. If that ever starts, those guards will have to have an eye of backing up the tackles and not be so concentrated on stopping Dorsey.

I assume you are speaking of pass plays only?
“Dorsey and sometimes Tank are both getting double teamed on the inside on most plays while even with one on one match ups Hali and Turk don’t seem to be getting any sort of rush.”
If thats the case, then either Hali or Turk are facing a tight end most of the time. There are only five linemen, so the numbers don’t work out, meaning it should be easier for our linebackers and secondary to cover the other available receivers. That being said, our DT’s should both be applying more pressure if our DE’s begin to get double teamed. One would think that 3 linebackers and 4 secondary men could cover 4 receivers.
“But what do I know, I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO” huh Angry?

It just seems this team lacks intensity.
In watching other defenses, there is a glaring difference in attitude.

It wasn't intensity.
Gretz has a good post up. There was a lot of gang tackling. When they got a hand on the ball carrier, he went down.
On the big plays, everyone got blocked or missed assignments. Poor performance not poor attitude.

The two hits on Smith.
There was attitude behind them. Same with Turk’s (late?) hits.

Frustration
Isn’t the same thing. They don’t fight off blocks. The intenstiy they lack is from the coaches. I am a firm believer that a team exudes the attitude of it’s coaches. Look at a Bill Cowher coached team. Those teams were built on the same philosophy that we are trying. Through the draft and let old players go. Those teams were never this bad.

Yeah, but Cowher
inherited a decent team from Chuck Knoll. Edwards inherited the oldest team in the NFL. Edwards should have blown up the roster right when he came and we would have lived out what we are seeing now in his first year. Then, we wouldn’t have had to experience his 2nd year when the old team collapsed in the middle of the season. All I know is that last season was a complete waste because we didn’t have the young guys to prep and we weren’t even competitive. However, I think this year isn’t a waste even though the play on the field makes you want to puke because at least our starters are young and have upside.

Cowher inherited a good defense
The defense should not be as bad as it is.
