Things that should happen over the bye week

This is just this reader’s opinion.  I have taken into account all the ideas people have come up with over the past few weeks and these are the only moves that I think are realistic.  Be gentle.

Things that need to change:

1.  Prepare Herb Taylor to start at right tackle.

The “Youth” movement now takes full effect.  Damion McIntosh was so bad on Sunday that I ended up screaming at my buddy for no reason at all and stopped drinking all together because the beer tasted bad.  That’s what his maddening play does to me.  Herb has not been molded into an NFL LT for 8 years so his ability to learn the position would be a much better investment that waiting for Sackintosh to figure it out.

2.  Get Donnie Edwards healthy and move him to MLB.

This is a position that we NEED leadership at.  IMO, Demorrio Williams has proven himself to be a quality starter and DJ will continue to improve (I hope....).  Pat Thomas has played valiantly but let’s just admit he was never the answer we needed.  I may even go as far as saying see what Nap Harris can do.

3.  Test Turk McBride at right DE.

F*ck it couldn’t hurt!….Hali, while I still believe a quality rush end just cannot match up against the premier athletes that line up at LT in the NFL.  Let’s see what Turk has got from that side of the line.  His bull rush would hopefully be more effective and he isn’t the slowest guy on that defense.  Maybe if he can get a little bit of push Tamba pick up where he left off (once healthy) and contribute a bit more.  We cannot be this terrible in getting to the QB.

4. Dick Curl

I know he’s a Herm guy.  Most people are from what I hear, but what EXACTLY has this guy done?  I guess we’ll probably have to wait until season’s end but Jim Zorn, a proven NFL quarterback and questionable HC choice is leading a talented, but not incredible, Redskin team over the home team in Dallas AND Philly.  Can anyone say Trent Dilfer? (love his analysis on ESPN)  jk

Things that should not change:

1.  The secondary.

I love watching these guys.  While overly aggressive (see 47 year old Mushin Muhammed’s best Usain Bolt impression) and sometimes ridiculously out of position, this unit has shown a ball hawk mentality and great ability against the pass when the run defense is playing well.

2.  The run game.

This one will be controversial to some of you, but I for one am not of the impression that Jamaal Charles can be as effective as he looked yesterday (if that's what you call effective).  We were in obvious passing situations and most of his yards came on draw plays.  I am however in favor of 2 back sets with Larry and Charles (this pending Jamaal improves his blocking).  Didn’t we hear about some of those?  Jamaal is effective in the passing game, but not a 20 carry a game back.  I am definitely willing to be proven wrong.

Great suggestions

One of few posts I’ve read about “implementing changes” or making moves that I fully, 100% agree with. Would like to see them done

Wow

I also agree w/ most of what you’ve say there. Not too sure about #3 – but you did say WTF give it a try – hard to argue !! We are getting NO pressure at all right now and as we’ve seen – Blitzing isn’t the answer.

How do you "get Donnie Edwards healthy"????

Are you suggesting HGH?

Maybe so

but in reality I just meant get him healhty with time and put him in the middle.

i'd have to say

i pretty much agree with all of that besides one little thing in the secondary….take out jon mcgraw and let our rookie morgan get play time…
we def. need to draft a middle LB or DE in the 1st round next draft unless we pick one up via trade or free agency

Nice to see someone part of the solution

The only one that I am not sure about is Donnie Edwards at Middle Linebacker. Don’t get me wrong, I think that he is capable, but I think his time is past. Not sure even as great as he has been, that he would play that position any better?

I'm Not Sold On Edwards In The Middle Either

San Diego didn’t re-sign him because he was getting older and they didn’t think he’d have the range or durability to play MLB. We signed him to play outside linebacker because he’s getting older and we didn’t think he had the range or durability to play MLB (which is why we also signed Napolean Harris). Add in his injury issues the last couple of years, and there’s very little reason to believe either we or the Chargers were wrong on that evaluation.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

I agree

I know they have high hopes for the speed and coverage skills of Dacus. We are all excited about the special team skills that Walden has shown, but neither will probably be able to step into a starting role this year. Do we dare risk another free agent pickup or do use a draft pick? So many questions…

Good call on Edwards

my reasoning mostly was around the topic brought up yesterday (can’t remember who brought it up) but we need leadership. The MLB is the captain of the defense and I just think it would be an improvement over what we have. Dacus is intriguing but I just think Thomas will do for now if there is nothing else. Any word on Napolean Harris’ demeanor or availability?

He Still Stinks

Apparently to a degree that even Rotoworld hasn’t written about him in over a month. Last entry they have on him is from the preseason. He’s not just in the doghouse, he’s buried under the doghouse.

You’d think that Peterson wouldn’t be so quick to hand out long-term contracts to linebackers he’s not 100% sure are going to be part of our plans in a year. But then again it doesn’t seem like Peterson learns from any of his mistakes. He just keeps coming up with new ones and pretending the old ones don’t matter.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

And we were doing so well

at getting through a thread without mentioning Peterson. sigh.

Kick returner

Is there a reason we’re not putting Charles at kick returner? I know he’s got questionable hands, but he’s also got home run speed.

I like the idea of McBride at DE. We have got to generate some pressure and it sounds like it’s worth a try.

I’d like to see us get a little ballsier with our secondary. They’re our strong part of our defense right now (how weird is that?), and I’d be allright with sending Page and Pollard on some blitzes to cause some mayhem. If we get torched deep, so what?

How bout we bring back the Run ’N Shoot?
