"Good thing is we’ve got two weeks before we play another game and we’re going to have to figure some things out defensively, especially against the run, and offensively how to make a first down. It’s puzzling to me. You play one week and then you play the next week like this - same players, same coaches. We’ve got to figure it out during the bye week."

Give me at least a day

At least one day, before you start throwing the silver lining line out there.

by primetime 07 on Oct 6, 2008 8:36 AM CDT   0 recs

WHAT?

Herm, you played against two different teams. It doesn’t just work the same against everyone. When you look at Carolina you see a smart, fast, blitz happy defense and you therefore must adjust and run draw plays, quick slants, etc. Against Denver, a terrible defense, you can call plays that they know are coming and still have them work because their defense is so bad. This guy is seriously inept.

Most Telling Comment
"I don’t think anybody – our staff and I know I didn’t – saw that coming given the way we played last week (vs. Denver)."

Translation: we were so busy patting ourselves on the back for beating a bad Denver team that we didn’t prepare for a much better Carolina team.

Herm is a pathetic coach.

Also

In a very short press conference Herm made five references to how good the Chiefs looked against Denver. Hate to break it to you Herm, but nobody gives a shit about Denver anymore. The game this week was against Carolina and the Chiefs looked like they were shocked that Denver didn’t show up again.

You are right on

This is the problem with the guy. I understand the glass is always half full but give me a break. WE ARENT TALKING ABOUT DENVER. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW WE SUCK.

12 men on the field? Coaching error. Not going for it on 4th and 1 when down 14-0? Coaching error.

by CBaller13 on Oct 6, 2008 10:40 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Gee whiz, Brian Waters saw it coming

a couple of other guys did too.

by sm7600 on Oct 6, 2008 11:26 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Trying to run

against Carolina would have been a waste of time. No other team has been able to do it w/ any real success and they actually have an O-line that can block. No, our only chance at breaking through that concrete front line would have been w/ a Pick Axe.

And correct me if I’m wrong – but Herm isn’t the Line coach and he didn’t pick the players that competed for those spots (not that I’m a Herm fan – I’m just saying is all).

by Cat Stabber on Oct 6, 2008 10:13 AM CDT   0 recs

You're Correct, But

Herm is responsible for writing in the starting lineups and he’s the one who keeps trotting Sackintosh out there because of his “run-blocking”. It’s not Herm’s job to train the line. But it is Herm’s job to field the best linemen available. And if McIntosh’s only potential upside is his run-blocking and he can’t open any holes with McIntosh in the lineup, then McIntosh needs to get benched…and that’s entirely on Herm if he isn’t.

and put in... who?

Herb was pretty much stinking it up on the left side.

by NJChiefsFan on Oct 6, 2008 10:26 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Herb

He was stinking it up against Julius Peppers, a top pass-rusher in the NFL. McIntosh was stinking it up against Charles Johnson, a two year vet who had .5 sacks in his career before yesterday. So I’m fine with giving Herb a shot on the right when Albert returns…I find it unlikely he’ll be worse than McIntosh, and even if he is there’s at least a chance that Taylor will get better. At this point in his career, McIntosh is as good as he’s ever going to get.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:29 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Or Richardson

If Richardson is so bad that he can’t perform at McIntosh’s level after a few games then we know that he’s probably not an answer at RT either. Every game McIntosh is out there, though, is just a waste of time.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:30 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Could Richardson be sitting behind McIntosh because of

Peterson’s decision? (overruling Herm possibly because of the money he is making)

by Lanier63 on Oct 6, 2008 10:36 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No Clue

I can’t pretend to be a mind-reader, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

I cannot believe how badly Peterson screwed up by signing McIntosh to a long-term contract. That alone should be reason enough to fire him.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good point.

I’ve got no problem switching the two. I just don’t think we should set high expectations.

There might be a reason he hasn’t broken into the lineup yet.

by NJChiefsFan on Oct 6, 2008 10:31 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe

But not a good reason. When you’ve got an old player who stinks and a young player who hasn’t completely stunk the young player should get at least a look.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:37 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I see your point however......

Brandon Albert is hurt. So right now, today (okay yesterday) – who else do you play ?? Richardson must clearly not be ready or he’d have been in there.

And now (unfortunately) the part that really sucks – I think that our best players were in there. That’s what has me concerened. Do we have guys that CAN get better ??

by Cat Stabber on Oct 6, 2008 10:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not Necessarily
Richardson must clearly not be ready or he’d have been in there.

You’re talking about a head coach who elevated Tyler Thigpen to starter over Damon Huard after a game where Thigpen completed less than 50% of his passes.

I don’t give Herm the benefit of the doubt on his lineup decisions any more. For all we know Herm isn’t playing Richardson because Herm actually thinks McIntosh is doing a good job.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:41 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Also

Referring to the fact that Herm doesnt coach the OLine. That is ludacris. He is the head coach, meaning he is responsible for all facets of our team. Ultimately, I think Herm decides who starts and also what type of play calling goes on. Chan Gailey can’t just overrule the head coach when calling running plays on first down. If Herm wants to run on 1st down when 9 people are at the line, then he makes those decisions.

by CBaller13 on Oct 6, 2008 10:44 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I also can't stand

Herm’s sh*t eating grin during the games. The guy is a joke. Why wouldn’t he every use the internet or watch the superbowl? He’s an NFL head coach. He could learn a few things with all the internet resources out there about football. An NFL coach not watching the super bowl is like a Senator not paying attention to the economy. If I’m a head coach I want to watch and see how the best NFl teams that respective year play. Not sit at home and play with my kids while thinking about run run passing.

by CBaller13 on Oct 6, 2008 10:46 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Very Apt Analogy
An NFL coach not watching the super bowl is like a Senator not paying attention to the economy.

Seriously, very good point. Willful ignorance of your job and unwillingness to learn from others is the most fundamental sign of incompetence and laziness. If Herm can’t be bothered to learn from others why would we ever assume that he’s going help these players improve or that he’s going to get better as a coach? You think Parcells didn’t pay attention to what other teams were doing? Or Lombardi? Or Shula? You think Belichick didn’t? Hell, we know that Belichick did…to the point that he was willing to push (and sometimes break) the rules to observe what other teams did.

That comment from the guy who used to watch film with him is sounding more and more like it’s legit…Herm’s just happy to be there and he’s not really interested in doing the legwork it takes to win football games.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:53 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

As far as Huard getting pulled

I think you need for Huard not to get hurt in this game because who’s going to go in for Brodie when he get pummelled by the Titans – Thigpen ?? No, the game was well over by the time he jammed Thigpen in there. I don’t think Herm had any expectation that things were going to improve w/ Thigpen in the game.

Hey, I’m not a Herm fan at all – I wonder however – if Albert wasn’t injured, might we have seen Herb on the right side for this game – maybe ?? All Iw as getting at is that Richardson must not be ready or he’d have gotten a shot – I mean really, every other rookie has seen game time, it Herm’s mandate and he’s said as much.

by Cat Stabber on Oct 6, 2008 10:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Doubtful

Not after the way the running game went against Denver. I think Herm was actually dumb enough to think that being able to cram the ball down the throat of a terrible defense meant that McIntosh was a good lineman.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 10:58 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's possible

I’m not in his head (there’s not enough room:). I suppose we’ll find out come the Titans game. I’ve got to believe that if Barry is at least competent – we’ll see him.

Also, with two weeks before the next game – I’d expect some personnel additions / changes. I’m curious to see what, if anythng Carl can pull off before the Titans game.

by Cat Stabber on Oct 6, 2008 11:09 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably Not Much

Very little usually goes on before the trade deadline. If anything we’ll be looking over the waiver wire…and there’s very little out there that should be enticing to us.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 11:16 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

I can’t imagine that the glaring void – that is our right side can be fixed, but you can bet there will be some phone calls…..

by Cat Stabber on Oct 6, 2008 11:25 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

My Suggestion

Would be Chris McDuffie. He looked somewhat promising during OTAs (for whatever that’s worth). All I know is that Adrian Jones needs to be gone…he’s as bad at guard as McIntosh is at tackle.

Are you military or ex-military by chance? :) Just curious.

No - just Canadian :)

and old !! I drove truck in the Oil Patch and hauled logs many MANY years ago before I went back to school and got smarted up – !!

by Cat Stabber on Oct 6, 2008 12:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If I recall ...

Brian Waters didn’t look that great at Guard last year either, did he? Who was it that he had lined up next to him at Tackle then … ?

Oh, right.

I’m not saying Jones is the same calibre as Waters, I’m just saying that he be good and, when he’s having to make up the difference for McIntosh’s poor play, still manage to look horrible.

by JacinB on Oct 6, 2008 11:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Jones

Was a bench player on a Jets team that needed help on the o-line. So I don’t think his poor play is a matter of him not getting the help he needs at tackle but of him just not being very good.

by UCrawford on Oct 6, 2008 11:40 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well it was nice he found

some good. We are off for two weeks…..YAY! If there is anything for them to figure out, it is how to get this team back because he has lost them.

by cmpotter on Oct 6, 2008 11:04 AM CDT   0 recs

Bye week, so we probably

won’t be outscored, outplayed, and outcoached this week. Two weeks from now, we will be two weeks closer to Herm’s eventual departure from the team whenever that may be. Sunday’s game was the most miserable excuse for a football game I have ever had the misfortune to witness. I am speechless.

by G.L. on Oct 6, 2008 11:57 AM CDT   0 recs

Herm capable at

picking the talent of defensive backs…because of his background of former DBs himself…he don’t know nothing about offense….bring back Al
Saunders

AD

by ali_djoo on Oct 6, 2008 12:26 PM CDT   0 recs

He's Probably Staying In St. Louis

So Saunders is not an option.

Nothing changes until...

Everything we have talked about doesn’t change until Herm leaves. He is trying so hard to prove to the NFL that his philosophy is right…no matter how many "L’s" it takes! In the end, he gets paid, the Chief organization is still profitable (low team salary, still high attendance), we end up drinking heavily on game day to ease the pain.
At least the beer is as cold as the team!
