7 Deadly Phases of Denial
Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Vince Lombardi
Dare I say that WE KNEW THIS. They told us it wouldn't be pretty. Herm and Carl and all them. We knew what we had signed up for before the ink on the rookie contracts had dried. It wasn't even time for training camp when excuses were being thrown about like dust in the wind. But our objectiveness was not objective. Our hope was found wanting, and our team, though young, is not very good. Don't act surprised. Refrain from your bitterness and loathing. Confusion is for the weak of heart. It is time to embrace the truth.
Oh sure, you have heard it all before. No one is truly shocked by the outcome of today's loss to the Panthers. They whipped our butts. As good as we all felt after last week's win is how utterly hopeless we feel after today's loss. The sky is falling and all that. But that is not the truth.
We want to be competitive, not to be the laughingstock. To fight tooth and nail every second that we are on the field. If we are going to lose, then the better team will know that they have just been in a dogfight from hell. Our pride and our honor are at stake. We're Chiefs fans, not fans of the Bills, Cardinals, or Saints. But wait...all those teams are better than us. Truly I must be in denial. How the mighty have fallen.
This is what it is. Should we put completely unrealistic expectations on the team to compete in hostile environments? Can we expect the coaching staff to work miracles with this young team? Where can our expectations honestly fall?
Our franchise chose this path. We did not go after more veteran players for our rebuilding project like the Raiders, Jets, and Dolphins did. They went for a more immediate "fix" for their teams. But they should have asked us, we are the experts. Carl is the King in scrounging and signing old, washed up QBs and free agents to come in and keep us just competitive enough. Enough to fill seats, and keep jobs, but never good enough to win the Big One. We always fell short. We all swore by blood oath, never again, not us. This time we were going to do it right. We were going to build the foundation from the ground up. These were going to be home grown players who many had never even wore another's jersey. I agreed that this was the way to go. Give us rebuilding, or give us death (little harsh I know!).
After the 1-4 start, and the overwhelming evidence that our team is giving a very lackluster effort, how should we feel? We should swallow our pride and hunker down for the long winter. This is going to take time, perhaps even next year won't be enough to turn this thing around. We have all sat and watched bad teams stay bad for years and said "Thank God that is not my team!". There fans had to be patient. They had to keep hope. Some resorted to wearing paper bags, some just don't go to the games. Some are still in denial. But remember, TRUE FANS stick. They don't run. Don't give up your season tickets just yet!
Understand this, I think that the changes will come. Whether that is GM or Head Coach is still to be determined. But the changes will come. Just be careful for what you wish for, because CHANGE is hard. Damn hard.

I've Never Had A Problem With Rebuilding
But I have zero faith that Herm is the person to implement it. The young players he and his group have brought in are not improving (except for the defensive backs…which leads me to believe that’s the only area of football and coaching Herm understands). His gameplanning has bordered on incompetent for most games…and if we’re completely honest it wasn’t so much that we were great against Denver but that Denver did a horrible job (Cutler kept making turnovers and the defense was anemic). We were competitive against New England, but it was a New England team that lost their MVP mid-game and bad coaching decisions played their part as well. Every other team we’ve played has thoroughly destroyed us.
It’s a good thing to constantly move in and develop young players. It’s not a good thing if you saddle those young players with a coach who can’t help them develop or teach them how to win. And that’s what they’ve got with Herm.

Herm, no doubt, has to shoulder a lot of responsibility
for what is going on. So does Carl. Great point about Denver. I think we EXPOSED them as frauds, and after seeing Miami beat the Chargers, what can you say about the AFC West? Horrible! I think Herm was right when he said that he may not be here to see it, but what he was trying to do was the right thing. Maybe he has lost the team a little? I hate to imply that but once we get down, we don’t fight back. Is it inexperience? I don’t know. My point is, we knew we were not going to be very good, and we would have to earn our stripes this year. Trying to keep what we are seeing as growing, and what we are seeing that is incompetent, is a very difficult thing to distinguish. If this poor play keeps up, we won’t have any problem seperating the two.

AFC West
I crunched the numbers a little while ago, and actually if you look at the records, the only reason that the Chiefs have been over .500 since Marty left is because of the AFC West. We’ve got a record of about .440 against all non-division opponents (AFC and NFC). We do slightly better than the rest of the NFL versus our divisional opponents but not by very much.
Basically, for the last 10 years all Carl Peterson has ever demonstrated is that he’s capable of hiring coaches and drafting players that are capable of keeping their heads above water in a bad division, but who can’t succeed against the rest of the NFL. And now that we’ve got Herm we’re not even that good against our division. So I think it’s time for Herm and Carl to go and for someone else to see if they can build on what we’ve got.

AFC West used to be the best!
I am trying to be patient, but if things stay this bad, I think we should say goodbye. If you know things are not getting any better, why wait for next year to try to change them? Not sure if I like the idea of interim coach. But if we keep losing like this, we should play some young ones like Richardson and De la Puenta, and perhaps make a trade for a QB? Do I sound desperate enough?
There were a couple of QBs that we have been interested in playing today. Rosenfels and Losman got some playing time. I have not had a chance to see how they did?
I was very disturbed by the play of the offensive and defensive lines. O line is the one we always talk about, but the D line was pushed around too easily for all the high draft picks we have playing on it. At least the O line is a bunch of guys (besides Albert) who no one expected to play! What in the world are we going to do about that!

Losman's Not Worth Trading For
Free agent after the season so we’d just be wasting a draft pick unless we’re absolutely certain he’d never sign here as a free agent voluntarily.
Hmmm, then again trading for him might not be a bad idea.

Turnovers and all
Rosenfels had way more offensive production than our QB.
Losman threw a touchdown pass off the bench farther than our QBs would ever throw! Damn.

It Was A Nice Pass
Like I said, he should be our primary free agent target this offseason.

Hell of a strike he threw to Evans.

Might be tough to sign free agents
If this team continues to be a laughingstock, it might be hard to sign any quality free agents this offseason. Almost all players will go where the most money is, but if two teams offer about the same, why would you go to a team that’s in disarray like this one? We might have to overpay to sign any free agent. And Peterson’s record on signing free agents is not great to begin with. I can’t stand the idea of him choosing yet another QB and also having to overpay for him to get him to come to KC.
Maybe trading for someone like Losman right now wouldn’t be that bad of an idea, but if they did bring him in, they’d better sign him to an extension right away. But on the other hand, if he had to play behind this line this year, he’d get hurt anyway.

Players always follow the money
Why else would some of these guys leave a team where they were in a good situation? Because they are not “appreciated” enough? If we pay, they will come. But it will be interesting to see about our GM situation as the season draws to a close. For all the upset fans out there, I would not be shocked if we have 1 more year of the Carl & Herm show to see if they cannot right the ship.

No
Is it fair to say anyone signed up for this? Rebuilding is one thing. It’s easy to root for a talented young team that makes mistakes. But this team is under-performing big time… there’s something drastically wrong behind the scenes. If they keep this up, there won’t be much of a team for the next coaches/managers to salvage.

No one signed up for this
I was just saying that I was all in on the rebuilding project. No one can predict how bad things will get. It takes a Great coach to keep it all together and get team moral and effort going during the hard times. I personally think that you cannot put a premium on confidence. Once that starts to slip, it all goes downhill quickly. I love that line from the Replacements where he is talking about Quicksand. I totally agree with that. The harder you try to get out, the more you sink. Looking for someone to blame is natural, and there is plenty of blame to go around. But this thing is salvagable. We have some good young talent on this team. We have superstar talent at some key positions. We may be as few as 6 to 8 players away from being very competitive. Every year one of the worst teams in the NFL beats one of the best teams in the NFL. A few plays here, a few mistakes there can make a big difference. Tell me what is different about the Packers this year. Favre is the only thing missing and they are 2-3. Winning in the NFL is a recipe that is ever evolving, we always think we are missing a few key ingredients. In our case, we are missing a lot!
