My Solution to the Chief's Crises

This solution will not be enacted until the end of the 2008 season. So many of you instant gratifacation subscribers will mock my proposal.

Let me preface this by saying I like Herm Edwards. I think players like Herm and I think people around the league respect his opinion and his ability to evaluate talent. That being said, I don't think Herm is a great coach.

My solution if I was Mr. Hunt would be to fire Carl Peterson at the end of this season and put Herm as the new GM and then woo Bill Cowher out of the pregame show booth to replace Herm as head coach.

I think this plan would be perfect. Cowher and Edwards have worked together before and it was sucessful. Cowher is a championship winning coach that would immediately give the Chiefs the prestige needed to make a key free agent signing or two while I think Edwards is a great player evaluator and would work well to get contracts signed and keep players happy.

Maybe, I'm just suffering from lack of sleep but I think that Cowher as HC and Edwards as GM would give the Chiefs what they need to win.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

In doing that

you still give Herm authority with this team and nothing will change. Cowher is who I am hoping for as well. Edwards is a great scout but that is as far as it should go.

Good outside the box thinking

and honestly it isn’t a terrible idea. The only problem would possibly be Cowher. From what I’ve read, he’s gonna want full control ala Bill Parcells. Maybe him and Edwards would come to an arrangement.

I like what Cowher brings to the discussion

HOPE. Promise of glory days past. But if we bring in a new regime, I say we should move on. You don’t keep blanking your old girlfriend when you find your new one. Move on.

Who cares if the players like him? They don’t play for him. They don’t develop. They get stomped by bad teams.

He could be the nicest guy on Earth for all I know, but he’s still a rotten football coach and to hell with keeping him around. Let him be a well-liked secondary coach…that’s the only area he’s shown any real ability to find and develop talent.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Agreed

Do other businesses keep a boss if he isn’t getting the job done but the employees like him or her?

No more retreads

We need to dump Peterson, obviously. But there’s no reason to promote Herman frickin Edwards. He needs to be demoted, not promoted. He would be a good D-Coordinator, but that’s his limit. We get a new GM in here and let him pick his own coach, which will NOT be Herm Edwards if we hire anyone decent. That should actually be a job interview question: who do you see as your ideal coach? What do you think of Herm Edwards as coach? Those questions should tell you plenty about any candidates.

This franchise needs new, original ideas and some vision, both at GM and head coach. No more retreads. Instead of hiring some guy who used to be good, hire the guy who is ready to be good in the future. This franchise has been living in the past for decades now, it’s time to start building the future.

The keeping Herm thing…wont happen…ever…ever…ever…not as GM anyway…He is more of a VP of Pro Personnel type guy, i def. see that in his future…not with us…but someone…

If it comes down to it

I still support Herm and think that this will all work out eventually, but in all honesty, if it comes down to it and the decision is made to bring in a new coach, they need to scrub the organization clean.

The fans are so disgusted and tainted with blind hatred and bitterness towards Peterson that if the new GM has any hint of a connection to Peterson, it will just give the fans an excuse to keep being jaded and bitter towards the team when things don’t immediately change for the positive (and they won’t) since they’ll just say one of Carls chroneys just took over. That rules out Herm (would never happen anyway), Kuharich or any of the player personnel guys already on staff. It also rules out the many front office people that took better jobs with other teams that have been with the Chiefs over the years that are now succesful front office managment elsewhere.

I still am not wavering in my support of the plan. The holes are becoming more and more obvious and the coaches are going to have to find some way to compensate for them (how you compensate for not having a competent QB and O-line and a defense that cannot stop the run or get pressure on the QB, I have no clue), but its really just a matter of time as more players are added during the offseason, those positions will gradually improve.
