Kansas City Chiefs Create New Rock Bottom In Crushing Shutout

Stats are here.

Not much to say after this, folks.  We couldn't get a measly field goal to avoid the shut out.

The Oakland Raiders match up two weeks ago was a miserable showing in all aspects of the game.  And if that was miserable then this was....I don't even have a word for it.

We keep coming back to the offensive line.  And the quarterback.  And, at times, the running back.  And the run defense.

It's fair to say the Chiefs have more holes than swiss cheese.

As a fan I have NO direction right now.  I'm mad, confused and beat down.  But that's still passion.  We're being tested this year - how will you respond?

By the way?

Those 3rd and long draw plays I hate so much?

Yeah, the Panthers ripped off one for 30 yard and another for 32 yards and a touchdown. Yeah.

It’s not what you play, it’s how you play it.

Back from the bar...

Penalties, Rookie Mistakes, Turnovers, and the O-Line

Overall, the D made tackles when they got a hand on someone. Despite the score they played hard (I was worried about that).

We shot ourselves in the foot when the O was already at a disadvantage.

Not sure Herb is better than Mac at this point.

WTF was the coverage where our blitz was burnt for the TD?

Mouthy Steve Smith got his clock cleaned twice (and I was hoping he wouldn’t get back up).

We'll see more games like today

and we’ll see more games like last week.

Not sure which we’ll see more of.

The good news? No controversy when Croyle is back.

Yeah!

I was just thinking about how this game makes for the perfect entrance of Brodie off the mend. But then again he has to go up against the Titan D when he gets back.

Steve Smith always gets back up!

He got his clocked cleaned? Yet he torched you for 96 yards! He is one of the toughest players in the NFL… He ALWAYS gets back up.

The Option I Would Have Voted For

Fire Herm and Carl and put a real management team in charge of the rebuilding movement.

I’m sorry, but there’s no way you can tell me that the head coach had a clue of how to prepare this team for this game. Rich Gannon had a comment from Herm where he apparently said he told his players to “not be perfectionists” and to “go out and just play” and my immediate thought was “Yeah, this definitely looks like a team that isn’t trying to be perfect…or even good”.

Herm’s a loser and a team-killer.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Oct 5, 2008 4:30 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agree

Herm is the type of guy I’d want coaching my kid’s peewee football team, but he is definitely NOT a person who should be in charge of an NFL franchise.

by cvigz on Oct 5, 2008 4:52 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh Herm

This game was the perfect example of why Herm has no idea what he is doing anymore. The playcalls were predictable and terrible. The players weren’t motivated at all. My conspiracy theory is that the Chiefs players have given up in order to get new management and a new coach and that they came out to play last week for the fans one last time this season. Did we pass once on 1st down?

Clamor for LJ trade

pisses me off too. It’s not LJ, its our line and whomever we revolve taking snaps. You can’t make lemonade outta thin air

by KansasCityShuffle on Oct 5, 2008 7:56 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

None of the above.

We all knew we would be terrible this year. Now, some weeks we’ll suck more than others, and this appears to be one of the suckier ones, but losing is losing.

I’m really not mad at all. I’m not necessarily optimistic, one of the options, because I am starting to seriously doubt whether we can ever do anything with Herm Edwards. I love his commitment to youth, and it was necessary for us to truly compete for a Super Bowl in the near-future-ish, but the whole commitment could be entirely ruined by such an imcompetent GM/Coach tandem.

Carl needs to go, Herm needs to go. Neither in the middle of the season, but this offseason they both need to go and we need to find ourselves a good, young coach. I’d rather stay away from the Bill Cowher-sorta mold, but I’ll take him if he wants to come. But I’d much rather go for a young, offensive genius-type (with Jason Garrett being the obvious target, if he is willing to come; if not him, there are a handful of others to consider…Lane Kiffin, maybe?) to build this offense. Let them pick up a QB that they think is a Super Bowl-caliber QB and develop him and continue the youth movement.

Herm isn’t the answer. Carl isn’t either. I think Herm did play a role in this whole thing, with him being willing to blow up the entire team and go all the way with youth, but I also think that he has very little chance of being ‘the guy’ for us to take the next step and be a perennial playoff contender.

So, as far as your question goes, I’m not angry, really. I expected this coming into the season. We all know Damon Huard is terrible. Thiggy, while young and exciting, ain’t much better, if at all. But I’m also not optimistic, at least as long as Herm and Carl are in charge.

Panthers

So what do you think about the Panthers? How do you think they can go? Playoffs? Superbowl? Sea of tranquility?

herm

herm plays so damn conservative its not even funny. We need a new coach and fast if we want to save these rookies from becoming busts.

play calling also

why did we run larry only 7 TIMES?!!!!

by fujirio on Oct 5, 2008 10:28 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because

We were getting blown out so we had to abandon the running game…plus Johnson wasn’t all that effective for those seven carries anyway.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Oct 5, 2008 10:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah but

the passing game is that much more effective?!

by Ilamuku on Oct 5, 2008 11:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Than The Running Game

Absolutely. Johnson had all of 2 yards on 7 carries which might as well have been zero yards. The passing game was infinitely more effective.

Of course, multiplying infinity times zero still gets you nothing. :)

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

What also got me

was “Moose” out ran our secondary…OLD MAN MOOSE!!!

by Ilamuku on Oct 5, 2008 11:38 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Posnanski Noted That

he noted that what we can take from Muhammad’s TD run was that a 35 year old wide receiver who got dumped by Chicago is apparently faster than our much younger, much-hyped secondary.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Oct 5, 2008 11:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

still

you cant just stop after 7 carries. keep giving him the rock and he will break one soon. You cant just stop giving it to one of the best backs in the nfl and let our back up QB handle the game from the air.

"one of the best backs in the NFL"

is kind of a question mark at the moment.

Will or ability?

I felt at the begining of the season that LJ’s ability had gone south and that he wouldn’t be the back again that we saw early in his career. But now I am convinced that it is his will to play that is the problem. He doesn’t hit the holes like he use to and he seems to just run in the specified direction with his head down, not even looking for alternate running lanes to open.

Last week on one of his TD runs he almost totally blew it because he ran right into the back of our o-line and just started pushing with his head down. Then after a couple of seconds he realised that no one had tackled him so he looked up and eventually saw the giant hole to his left, then he managed to go and get the TD.

I think he doesn’t buy into the team and its ideas, so I want to see smith and Charles running the rock to start the game. At least they try to find running lanes even if the designed one is not open.

By LJ

running into the line he was able to freeze the linebackers and DBs long enought to trot into the end zone. Who can complain about the result?

Also, maybe LJ was making a statement to the coaching staff by running where the plays were designed to go. I’m sure he’s trying to tell them that it ain’t working. If he makes cut backs and changes plays and scores, what will get changed? Nothing.

Depends

on how fast the one is going to infinity while the other is going to zero. :P

I would have liked another choice

I am just numb, I no longer feel angry or embarassed after a loss like that because I feel like it is useless. This team will look like this all year.

I don’t know what is wrong with the run D, but the pass D’s problem is that there is absolutly NO pass rush. You could have the best secondary of all time back there and if you give the QB five minutes to throw he is going to find someone open.

My list of concerns by position is:
1. pass rushing DE (they help the entire D so much)
2. More O-line talent
3. QB (I just want an average one at this point)
4. MLB
