What does Tyler Thigpen need to do to keep his job?
Okay Chiefs fans. Even though it's Halloween, "real" work is taking up my time today so I figured I throw out an open thread of sorts. The question is: What performance does Tyler Thigpen need to have this weekend to keep #2 QB Quinn Gray from taking his starting gig?
Repeat what he did in New Jersey last week? Simply avoid a total meltdown?
I'm curious to hear your thoughts and thanks for being patient during this slow week.

My Guess
Not turn the ball over. I think as long as he is somewhat of a “manager,” Herm won’t pull him. No picks (to his fault) or fumbles. Just don’t screw up.
Turnovers
and accuracy. If he can build on last weeks performance and continue NOT to turnover the ball than that’s half the gig. Accuracy is directly related because if he misses by miles like he used to then it’s bound to end up in the defenses hands. If he maintains his composure and hits his routes he should do well. The Tyler Thigpen we saw last Sunday was nothing like the one we’ve seen weeks previous…
As a Chief fan I want to see any one of our QB’s do well, but a little part in me wants Tyler to tank again so we can see what Gray is made up of. One could argue Thigpen has more upside than Gray just because of his youth…

Thigpen
At least needs to keep his TD/INT ratio fairly close to 1:1, needs to get his completion percentage into the mid-50s for the season (while still throwing downfield), and needs to stay healthy. If he can do those three things, he’s worth keeping around for next year. If not, might as well cut him loose afterwards.

Do what Brodie couldn't...
win one game.

He needs to have a pulse at the end of the game and thank his stars.
If he stays healthy he should consider it a good omen.
If he makes the last game look like a fluke then a lot of folks on here are going to have egg on their face. Just be competitive…actually, change the play at the line of scrimmage if he reads blitz ….would be a nice change of pace.
Just keep matriculating the ball down the field boys.
Progression
As long as he progresses, he will stay #1. He does have the upside over Gray because of his youth and size. To keep his job, he will have to be around 60% completion and 2:1 touchdown to turnover. As UCrawford said, he has to stay healthy. Minus the Titans game, this is going to be the toughest defense this year, so as long as he manages the game and doesn’t show panic and poor decision making, then I’d call it progress.
I WANT to see: 1. >65%
2. 2 + passing TDs
3. < 2 interceptions
4. 100+ passer rating
5. Use of checkdowns, based on solid coverage reads
6. < 3 sacks with no fumbles
7. Believeable play fakes & bootlegs
8. > 5 throws over 20 yards with 3+ completions
I think he did well last
Week because it is an offense he is comfortable in. When you are familiar with something it is easier to run, and have success.
For A 2nd Year QB
A mid-50s completion rate would probably be a reasonable expectation. Especially considering Thigpen’s accuracy issues in most of the games he’s played. Third year’s when you should really expect someone to post superstar numbers (which is what the stats you’ve listed would be). I’d settle for Thigpen completing over half his passes and not making a lot of really stupid decisions.

Uh,
those are some pretty high goals. If he played like that the rest of the season, we might go 8-8. I’ll be happy if he completes more than half of his passes and throws one more TD than INT.
