Most Memorable Chiefs Games Ever???

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the site but love what I see so far and can't wait to get more involved.

A question for you though- If you were to think back over the past 30 years or so of Chiefs football, which individual games stick out most in your minds?  Things like huge comebacks, miraculous wins, crazy things that happened in the stands, SuperBowls, conference championships,  blunder type games (Leon Lett type things)?

Thanks guys!!  Just trying to get some insight into what makes the Chiefs so special to so many of us!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Tamarick Vanover's return against the Chargers on Monday Night in OT

Montana magic.

It was terrible, but losing to Elway and the Broncos 14-10 in the divisional round after going 13-3.

Dante Hall’s return against the Colts in the playoffs.

Finally win in Mile High

Montana to Davis giving Elway a dose in front of his own crowd.

by cmpotter on Oct 30, 2008 5:50 PM CDT reply actions

Elway finally got his

I loved this game, not often both teams come back in the final minutes of the game. With two of the greatest come from behind QBs of all time in the game this was just special. I think it is still considered the best monday night game of all time.

by tevans96 on Oct 31, 2008 1:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Monday Night ....Vanessa Williams sings her song (save the best for last)

and Joe Cool wins it in the final minutes. Marty was winless at Mile High til that game.

The other was the 2003 game against Green Bay when the Chiefs were down like 21 pts in the 4 qtr, and I turned off the VCR in frustration. Only flip the VCR back on to catch closing parts when Trent came from behind to win it 40-34 in OT. Great comebacks.

Where to start...

Chiefs Raiders a few years back when LJ had the buzzer beater TD over the top. I had a college friend Raiders fan in town for that game which made it pretty boss.

I was in Alaska

With my furture brother in-law who is a raider fan. It was actually broadcasted there it was great to watch his look of shock and defeat when Vermeil decided to go for it and succeeded

How could I forget

Grbac to Rison in the second game of the 1997 season.

Monday night. Grbac and Rison were both new to KC. 11 second remaining, no timeouts. Rison big times the safety and hauls in a 33 yarder with 3 seconds left to win the game.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 30, 2008 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Was it Seattle at Arrowhead?

It was raining cats and dogs, the stairs looked like water falls, and we get a win 17-10, with the game being stopped early. Geen Bay Trent green to Eddie Kennison with the big pass play to win it!

by Eric Allen on Oct 30, 2008 8:18 PM CDT reply actions

Chiefs vs. Browns

Final drive with a few seconds left. As Trent Green is getting sacked, he flips the ball to a lineman, who scrambles down the field for a good amount of yards. The defensive player, thinking he just made a game winning sack, takes of his helmet and throws it to the ground in celebration. 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the run. Chiefs kick a field goal to win the game.

That was the season opener…and a game listed on some of our fans’ most memorable (in a bad way) lists, lol…

Whoops

You’re right. I looked it up and was counting the preseason games. I thought it was the season opener at first though :)

by Joel Thorman on Oct 31, 2008 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Bunch of games!

First one would be when Dante Hall had that game winning return vs the Donkeys! The LJ leap to score and beat the raiders when time expired! And although we lost both times, the Colts playoff game and the Monday nighter vs New England! But great atmospheres!

Titans game on MNF

The announcers played it down because McNair was out. Billy Volek stepped in and went toe to toe with Trent it was the second most points in MNF history.
Last years charger game was memorable for me. It was my sons first game he was barely one but it was worth it especially since we came from behind and won.

Wow, that is amazing there are so few of us "oldies" on here

Most memorable games for me:
1. Superbowl, Chiefs vs. Minnesota
2. Longest game in history, Chiefs vs. Miami, 1971
3. Chief vs. Jets for AFL Divisional Playoff Game 1969
4. Chiefs vs. Seattle, Derrick Thomas sack record, 1990
5. Chiefs vs. Buffalo, 1966 my first game I can recall watching with my dad (I was 5 yrs old)

Wow...

…it’s sad to think your last memorable moment was 18 years ago. Has it been that long? Wow, time has flown. But, you’re right, those are some great ones.

1) Watching the Chiefs play on Christmas Day with my Dad and we both had Santa’s Hats on.

2)Anyone remember Montana winning the playoff game at Arrowhead against Pittsburgh with the last second TD pass into the endzone?

It was a CHILLING day there. I remember bringing a blanket and having a ski bib on and freezing my nuts off. I actually bought hot chocolate and by the time I started drinking, it was lukewarm.
FUN FUN FUN game. Funny how miserable weather doesn’t seem to matter that much when the Chiefs win :)

Just keep matriculating the ball down the field boys.

Dont get me wrong

I enjoyed the Montana-Elway duel and other games that were mentioned, just not in my top five.

I gotcha

Yeah, it’s the ones that stand out for each person. I forgot to mention Montana getting the concussion in the AFC championship game against Buffalo. Last game he ever played.

lot of great players

We have had a sprinkling of really great players since the Super Bowl days on about every team but that was The Team. Seems every position had a great player and they played for the team not for themselves. I was 12 years old in 66 and I became a life long fan then. I loved that team and the great rivalries in the AFL. We had an incredible defense then as you well know and a very good offense. Tough guys who knew how to play and were athletic. I wish we could bring back all of the atmosphere back today. It wouldn’t be right to not mention Hank Stramm. He was really right for the times and knew how to put all this into a very entertaining package. I miss those days and wish these young pups could see and feel what a memorable time that was.

Thanksgiving VS. Broncos

Best Thanksgiving ever. From smashing pumpkins in the parking lot, to dancing on the field during halftime, awesome day. And the Chiefs actually won!!

by C-7PumpkinSmasher on Oct 31, 2008 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

Montana Vs. 49ers

The first year we got Montana, 93 or 94 I think, the 49ers came into Arrowhead. In his first game against his former team, Montana lit them up. But the moment I remember from that game is when DT had a safety on Steve Young and Arrowhead just blew up. Glorious day.

by C-7PumpkinSmasher on Oct 31, 2008 8:59 AM CDT reply actions

We killed them

Like 44-7. It was Montana’s second year I think and the 49ers won it all that year.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 31, 2008 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought it was 44-9

I remember the headline in the paper reading “44-9ers” or something like that.

A lame Monday night game...

I think it was against the Packers in the mid 90’s. It was the kind of game that Herm has wet dreams about. Slow it down, slop it up. No action what-so-ever. But they had handed out team posters at the gates. Well about the 3rd quarter, the paper airplans started to fly. Then they really started coming down. Before long the only cheers heard were for the planes that made it on the field.

by HIV 2 Elway on Oct 31, 2008 9:02 AM CDT reply actions

I have a vivid memory

of Montana’s pick in the end zone against the Bills in ’94, right before the half ended.

by Chris Thorman on Oct 31, 2008 9:58 AM CDT reply actions

Good memories and bad memories

The DT meltdown game, when he had all those personal fouls. I believe it was against Shannon Sharpe and the Donkeez. Screw that horseface beeyotch.

The last playoff win

At Arrowhead vs the Steelers . The Arrowhead crowd gave the team quite a send off after the win. So much hope and optimism….

by C-7PumpkinSmasher on Oct 31, 2008 11:25 AM CDT reply actions

The rain game

Chiefs Vs Seaturds I believe. Mid- 90’s. Just raining like crazy the entire game. Total slop fest on the field. I think they actually called the game. I remember being in row 4 of the upper deck, up to my knees in water. CRAZY!

by C-7PumpkinSmasher on Oct 31, 2008 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

Too many games

As a season ticket holder since 1990, there are a lot of memorable games, but also quite a few of forgettable ones too. All the playoff losses still burn. Chiefs- Colts 2003 was a hell of game. No punts I believe. Dantes return was sick. But Priests’ fumble toward the goaline…. SHIT… heartbreaker. I guess I still havent gotten over that one….

by C-7PumpkinSmasher on Oct 31, 2008 11:31 AM CDT reply actions

Priest's fumble

Was around the 50. Jack ass had nothing but green ahead of him and he got caught from behind. That was the day Preist Holmes died in my eyes. You don’t get caught from behind and fumble in the playoffs. DEAD TO ME.

by HIV 2 Elway on Oct 31, 2008 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Priest

Man are you mean. Priest gave us so many memorable plays. You hardly ever get a player like that. You are wrong wrong wrong.

by FanSinceLen on Oct 31, 2008 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

My memory is fuzzy

One game that I remember the emotion of but can’t actually remember the game was back in the mid 90’s.

If I remember right it was the last game of the year and we won, but we had to have Pittsburgh lose. Once the Chiefs game was over they put the Pittsburgh game up on the jumbo tron and let us watch the end of that game and they lost so we made it to the playoffs. I just remember that it was like a huge party for the fans that stayed to watch the other game. Does anyone else remember this?

by tevans96 on Oct 31, 2008 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

Yes 2006 playoffs

We also needed SF to beat DEN which they did in OT. Thank god for Joe Nedney.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 31, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

It was back in the 90s

The game I was thinking about was back in the 90s when I still made enough money to have season tickets, and it was still while Marty was the HC.

by tevans96 on Nov 1, 2008 7:40 AM CDT up reply actions

After the Jets won on Saturday we needed...

Cincinnati loss or tie against Pittsburg
Denver loss against San Francisco
Tennessee loss against New England

by Joel Thorman on Oct 31, 2008 10:55 PM CDT reply actions

Man, we really did luck out on that one

I had forgotten about all that stuff that needed to happen.

Okay, has anyone noticed that this guy posted this on a lot of different SB Nation team sites?

I was just over at the Lions site reading about Culpepper, and they called him out on spamming this.

Yep

He did. I mean, it created good conversation….but, yeah, it’s been noted. Thanks.

Losing to the Broncos in the playoffs

i think it was 97. i’m still sour about it.
Does anybody remember how the broncos came out that game and had covered themseles in grease to make it hard to tackle them? and all they got was a 15 yard penalty and told to wipe it off!!!!
and then there was the potentential game winning touchdown gonzalez caught in the air in the endzone but was pushed out of bounds (this was admitted by the defender) but nothing was called!!!

most disappointing loss ever.

by KCWolfff on Nov 2, 2008 1:27 AM CDT reply actions

i’m convinced we would have won the superbowl if we had won that game. broncos went on to do it instead.
