Offseason Moves

The offseason that follows this season is one of the most important in recent Kansas City Chiefs history.  Could Carl be gone?  What about Herm and the coaching staff?  That has already been discussed enough on this site, so lets talk about which free agents will be available in the offseason.  The key positions we need to make upgrades to our:OL, DE, LB, QB, and WR.

Offensive Line Free Agent Targets

Jordan Gross OT Carolina Panthers- He was franchised for this season, but the chances are it will not happen again.  He has been an above average OT since he came into the league in the 2003 draft.  With him at RT and Albert at LT we would be in good shape at the tackle position for the next few years.

Marc Colombo OT Dallas Cowboys- He is a very large RT that is in the final year of his contract with Dallas. He is a little older than we may want, but he has played at a high level the past few years at Dallas.

What I would do: Sign Gross to a 4 year deal.

Defensive End Free Agent Targets

Julius Peppers DE Carolina Panthers- Very athletic, but streaky player who looks like he lacks motivation.  I'm a little worried about how he will respond to the huge contract he will get this offseason.

Terrell Suggs- A cheaper option to Peppers, but will probably turn out to be worth more in the long run.

What I would do: Flirt with Suggs to see what he wants, probably end up drafting a DE though.

Linebacker Free Agents Targets

Karlos Dansby LB Arizona Cardinals- A must gert in my opinion.  He will be exspensive, but he is young, talented, and intense. Visit his website here.

Jonathan Vilma LB New Orleans Saints- Will his relationship with Herm be enough to pull him out of New Orleans?  Not sure, but he is proving to be healthy this year and will only be 27 when next season starts.

What I would do: Throw the bank at Dansby.

Quarterback Free Agent Targets

Jeff Garcia QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers- He's a man he's 40! But signing him to a 2 year deal, while a qb we drafted sits on the bench learning would be a good thing.

JP Losman QB Buffalo Bills- Who doesn't want this guy in KC?  He will be 28 next year, has a rocket arm, and is a good leader, BUT he is injury prone.

What I would do: Sign Garcia to a 2 year deal, and draft a QB in the 1st round in 2009 or 2010

Wide Reciever Free Agent Targets

Nate Washington WR Pittsburgh Steelers- Young, big play threat( at the combine he ran a 4.5 40, with a 39 inch vertical).  He would be a cheap option in the offseason, with more potential than Devard Darling.

TJ Houshmandzadeh WR Cincinnati Bengals- Most accomplished WR to hit the market, he will be way to exspensive for this rebuilding team.

What I would do: Sign Nate Washington to a 5 year deal, and draft a WR as well.

Gross!

I say we sign Gross first and foremost, suggs would be huge as well but no more stupid ass wide outs with potential. Bradley and D-bowe are solid one and two. Bradley was a 2nd round pick in Chicago, tell me the last wide out to have a big year there. He was a main target this weekend and has been in the offense what 3 or 4 weeks. And Garcia is not the answer if you wanna bring someone in bring is JP cannon of an arm and still young. Then we can use all our pick on linemen o and d, and line backers.

Those moves really don't hurt you though

So why not sign Nate Washington? He would play for very little money and he is a big play threat, I know that DVD hasn’t worked out, but his contract also isn’t killing us.

Rec'd

I agree with all for the most part. Not totally sure about Garcia, he’s been injured this season and I wonder how much longer he’ll last. I’m not sure we could even get one full year out of him.

Very well done, Jason.

Thanks

The thing about Losman is that he will just delay us from drafting a QB. What happens when Losman gets hurt? We will be in the same position as this year with no future qb in the mix. Losman has a ton of talent, but I just want to go in a different direction. Garcia is the best of the one year stop gap qb’s out there, and he is mobile so thats why I chose him.

I'm down with Losman

As long as we draft a QB this April.

Next year

RG/RT Herb Taylor, RT Barry Richardson, RDE Brian Johnston, QB Tyler Thigpen, and WR Mark Bradley are all players we currently have that have potential to develop into solid starters, and I really hope a couple of them do.

We need a couple linebackers though. Both MLB and OLB. Maybe one free agent and one high draft pick?

by Vince D on Oct 29, 2008 11:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If all those guys become capable starters I will be shocked.

I could see Taylor and Bradley out of that group, but I agree that all of those guys should play to see what we have. I think Dansby and Gross are my top 2 priorities in the offseason.

Why Johnston?

I haven’t seen much of him at all and he’s a 7th rounder. Those guys rarely work out.

Just because Gunther is so high on him

And also since at one point in the Denver game he was in on a sack but wasn’t credited for it… I think he could end up being pretty good. Plus he was a monster of a DE in college, he was just division II so a lot of people overlooked him.

by Vince D on Oct 29, 2008 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Gunther was high on Pat Thomas too and we know how that turned out.

And, frankly, Gunther’s running a defense that is ranked in the bottom half of the league so his opinion shouldn’t carry much weight IMO.

I don't really remember him being that high on PT

I just remember he said he thought PT had better instincts than Harris… which may or may not be true.

Thanks for the info and hard work Jason

I hadn’t paid much attention to Dansby, but I will now!

Yeah, excellent work Jason

Dansby is a freak…I want him bad but he’ll be very pricey.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 29, 2008 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly...

I don’t think any of those players are going to hit the market except for Garcia and Losman. Suggs, Peppers, Gross and Dansby will all get extensions or franchised again. I think we should sign Losman, Vilma and Nugent(K) in the offseason. I’m all for delaying a high draft pick on a QB for next year because there are no attractive ones this year. We need to get a DE in the first round or possibly OT, but the only kind of tackle you draft that high is LT and I think we have a good one already. We could get a right tackle in the 2nd like an Alex Boone of Ohio State. Then, a RG like Urbik of Wisconsin in the 3rd. I like Pat White (QB) in the 4th and converting him to a WR. To me thats just realistic because those sexy FAs never end up hitting free agency. It addresses all of our needs at QB, RE, RT, RG, MLB, WR and K.

Gross has already been franchised once

I doubt they do it again, and I do think that Dansby hits the market this year, just because that is how the Cardinals do business.

Thanks, Great Post

I appreciate the great research. I agree with all but the QB part. Gross and Dansby would be great additions and I think easily doable. I like the thought of Suggs & Vilma both, but don’t think they will be available.

I am too high (not on drugs) on our current QB potential to even entertain the thought of drafting at QB this next year. The year after, yes. We have very young potential already. Losman is a possibility, but the Bills are very down on his abilities, so I don’t see the value vs. our current QBs IF, IF, IF they show improvement the remainder of this year. I still think Martin could be very good, and Tyler is just now starting to show himself. We will know for sure by Jan. I still like Brodie as a solid backup, once our line is solid.

We also now need to look hard at RB in the early rounds. I thought we were solid for years, but now I’m not so sure.

by TXChiefan on Oct 29, 2008 1:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Disagree about RB

They’re a dime a dozen. Our OL made Priest and LJ stars. I say fix the offensive line and throw whoever we want back there.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 29, 2008 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I completely accept that

You’re right. The O-line is the #1 priority and our LBs are the #2 priority. My thoughts were if we could get one or two solid FAs for the O-Line and LB, a #1 & #2 pick on O-Line and LB, then we have some depth and could look at a good #3 pick on an RB without reaching. That position does need addressed in light of our current situation though.

by TXChiefan on Oct 29, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I completely agree.

But I also think that the upcomming draft is pretty deep at O-Line, LB, and DE. QB might be deep it depends on which ones come out early so I wouldn’t rule out getting a QB either.

Gross & Losman are the only signings I'd make

and if we are going to throw money at anybody it should be Losman. We can get a franchise LB out of the draft – shouldn’t have to pay for somebody’s elses.

Garcia would be a horrible move and as much as I despise Bones, I’d rather watch him play left handed for a full season then ever see Garcia in a Chiefs uniform

by KansasCityShuffle on Oct 29, 2008 3:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

of course

we have to keep in mind who our GM is right now and his ability to sign the better FA’s. I’m not sure anyone that was spoken highly of on this site last year was signed, by the Chiefs.

I think Carl should be out at the end of this year. I have seen where it has been said that he was told he would be allowed to see thru the rebuilding of the team and the revamp of Arrowhead. But I hope that Clark is intellegent enough to hire a football guy, not another suit, to be the new GM. Let Carl retain his title as President and handle the price gauging. I say let Herm stay one more year just to see how this turns out.

But Herm has to grow a pair in free agency

We have to be willing AND able to walk the fine line in negotiations, ala Tampa Bay last year with the signing of the Center we wanted.

Jeff Faine was signd 30 minutes into free agency

45 minutes in and there were quotes from him about it. To me that looks like tampering something which Herm insisted they would not do.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 29, 2008 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Reality

I think that Herm has gotten a good dose of humble pie this season. Changing the style of offense, going back and forth with the Defensive personnel, etc. I hope that with the good base of players we have, he will see that in reality, it takes a mix of building through the draft AND acquisition of key young FAs for stability and leadership.

I predict good things this off season. His reputation and career, and the entire Chief franchise is hanging on this next season. Clark isn’t THAT patient.

by TXChiefan on Oct 29, 2008 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point

I almost hope that Herm does reach and and attack free agency like his job is on the line.
