Giving up the big play. The Chiefs have a bad habit of allowing 50-60+ yard TD runs and they need to fix this immediately. Also, don’t forget the Chiefs Defense still gave up 420 yards, that’s a lot of yards and for a defense that has been building for 3 years it should be better than this by now. Last week I was calling for Gunther’s head and I still think it should be considered.

Calling for Gunther's head ??
A little premature don’t you think ?? The Gunt didn’t pick his linebackers and I’d bet he’s not real happy w/ some of the personnel he’s expected to compete with. The LB position wasn’t exactly at the top of our 2008 draft priorites. I believe that K.C. will address this issue in the off-season whether throught the draft or (more likely) FA.
Compared to last year
We’re doing worse… and I don’t think I’m out of line in saying that almost everybody here expected us to at least maintain the same level of D, if not improve with our off-season acquisitions.
So what is the big difference?
Is Pat Thomas worse than Napoleon Harris? Maybe a 100% healthy Nap.
Donnie Edwards is dinged up just like he was last year.
D. Johnson is the star of the bunch.
Our CB’s are an improvement this year in my opinion.
We have the same Safeties and they’re a year more seasoned.
Our D-line suffers the loss of Jared Allen, but we pick up a potential stud in Dorsey.
So why is our D so much worse this year? Did Jared Allen make that much of a difference?
I’m a big fan of Gun, but something just isn’t making sense to me. I am honestly at a loss here. To me it seems like it should be a coaching issue. Maybe not so much that they are not coaching them the right techniques – but perhaps these guys aren’t buying in to what they’re being sold. Or they’re not playing hard for these coaches. I think it may have something to do with our scheme. Our blitz packages are ineffective. Either this “gap D” that the LB’s are playing isn’t being executed properly or it’s just not a good fit for our team. In the end, we can’t try to switch schemes mid season. I’m almost positive that we will ride out the season with Gun for better or worse.

Jared Allen
He was the only one able to get pressure on the QB. He helped the defense a TON. I think an effective speed rusher can mask plenty of deficiencies on defense.

True, but
Most of these long runs should be kept in check by the linebackers first and the secondary next. I am not sure that the effect of Allen would have stymied the opposition from running those same plays this year. The other teams scouting the Chiefs are seeing something on film each game and exploiting it. Maybe Herm should invite an “outsider” to look over the film and give his take on what he may see that is hurting us on these runs.
I just don’t want to give up on Gun yet, but the week after week thing is hurting the D’s confidence and our chances of winning a game.
