And There Rode A Young Hero. And His Name Was Bones. And Hell Followed With Him.
Last week when Damon "Chicken-Wing" Huard went on IR, there was woe. Woe upon our franchise. The starter was announced as Tyler Thigpen, the young, unproven quarterback out of Coastal Carolina who put up "terrible numbers" against bad competition. The words came forth like water from the fountains of KC.
"NOT AN NFL QUARTERBACK."
"PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A QB"
"TERRIBLE."
"WILL NEVER DEVELOP THE ACCURACY TO BE AN NFL QUARTERBACK"
"WILL HAVE FOUR PICKS"
Everyone bagged on him. The media, and us. Especially us.
And you know what he did? He came out and did his job. He crossed the mark I've been waiting all season for. 200 yards. He ends with 280 yards, 69% completion rating (that's better than 50% by the way), 2 TDs, and he would have had more if not for some bad calls and terrible conservative play calls in the fourth quarter that didn't give him a chance.
Bones is mobile, he's got an arm, he has a connection with Bowe (WHICH IS HUGE), and most of all, the kid's a playmaker. We have none. This kid could have come out and folded, just tried not to get hurt, just tried to make the little small save throws (sound familiar?), and gotten out alive. Tyler did everything he could to help this team win, and who knows what would have happened if he'd been given a better chance on the second to last drive.
All this means is that Bones had one good game. That's it. But it also showed he's improved. And that he has some of the things we're looking for. We can bring in Culpepper if people think we should, but we have Gray if Tyler goes back to his old ways.
But for one day, even though we lost, Tyler Thigpen AKA Bones proved all the doubters wrong.
Go get 'em, kid.

I mentioned before,
I think this guy has potential. he’s not afraid to scramble and he’s not afraid to take a hit to make a play.
Those are all good things. He has some good people to throw too and if we can get this sieve called an Offensive line to close the gaps for even a 3 count, he can actually get the ball to the right places.
We really really need a dependable RB to take the pressure off of him though and LJ isn’t it.
again, the Oline has a role to play in that equation as well but get a guy who can MAKE 8+yards happen when he has the ball and you have a team.
I am back to t he position of viewing this season as a builder. and if they bring in Culpepper, I may have to cry in my beer for awhile. ( if I drank anyway)
I think for all the people saying Thigpen hasn’t got but the one win and it proves nothing attitude, then at least one win should equal another chance.
if nothing else, it helps him to build and capitalize on the experience to see if he has what it takes or not.
it’s not like we’re really in the standing or likelihood of getting the ring this season anyway, if we can’t get the gold, let’s at least give the guy the experience for next time.

Then who?
I am back to t he position of viewing this season as a builder. and if they bring in Culpepper, I may have to cry in my beer for awhile.
Culpepper I think could be better than any option currently on the team. Tyler Thigpen likely won’t have many more games like he did today.

You are basing that off of one bad start.
What if he plays next week like he did today? My biggest complaint with the Thigpen haters has been this.
The things he’s bad at? Accuracy, decision making, poise. Those are things you can coach.
The things he’s good at? Making plays, throwing with velocity, having moxie, and being mobile. Those are things you can’t coach.
This was my argument for him over Huard. Huard had no potential to improve. He could only decline after the Denver game. Tyler at least has a higher ceiling, even if he never reaches it. Go back and look at his numbers from last week’s game when he came in and then this one. The kid’s starting to get it.

My only worry is spending the money on Culpepper
because we are so desperate. I am sure he will want a 2 or 3 year deal. Do you think that might prevent us from going after another free agent such as Losman? And how long till he would actually be able to help us this year? I agree Thigpen is probably a flash in a pan, but Culpepper might be an overreaction.

Forget Losman.
I think Gray and Culpepper are a better fit than JP. His decision making has alway been a problem, and we can’t afford it.

Additionally
my wife asked “Why not Culpepper?”
I said, “well, a guy who’s never really recovered from surgery and who couldn’t get a job based on his inability to move well.”
wife: “Wait, doesn’t the Chiefs o-line suck like nothing else?”
Me: “Yes. yes it does.”
wife: "So why would you bring in a guy with injury issues in his knee?’
Me: “Because we’re idiots.”

Fair enough
I’ll put the order in and have it waiting for you.
I say this knowing perfectly well he’s 70% likely to throw three picks next week.

Thats
a little harsh to say he’s gonna get"brodied" in two games. The guy had a good game and you can’t give him props? We’re not saying the guy is Montana, we’re just saying he played well and has potential. Maybe you want him to get “brodied”

would run a shotgun formation too much if he were the O-coordinator.

Real improvement
I didn’t think Bones had it in him but I must say that he played about as good of a game as I have seen from a Chiefs QB in 2-3 years. If he is able to duplicate this effort a couple of more times this season I would get behind him as our QB of the future.
Maybe it was just nerves but his accuracy was spot on this week and that was my main concern about him. I must say he looked like an NFL QB.

Hater Numero Uno
Few disguise “Bones” more than me. He at times has brought me close to breaking things in fact. All I can say is he shut me up yesterday. He played a good game, I think coaching actually designed the playbook around his abilities and for once in a long time we were actually competitive. If he can stay out there and mimic this success he’s found himself a starting spot (can you believe this shit?) and yesterday in my eyes he EARNED his roster spot.
Perhaps we’re all starting to see what the coaching staff saw in this kid in practice. Gotta give props where props are due, and Bones played well yesterday
