Jezzy Chreezy!

My head's spinning from all the crap going on! Economy's flipping us the super-bird. The Presidential candidates and their subordinates keep showing their asses all over national television. And now two (count 'em) quarterbacks on IR?

Anyone have the number for Calgon? 'Cause the low pressure area between my ears needs a vaca-cay :(

So, after Brodie Croyle limped out of the stadium Sunday afternoon, I was gonna come on here and be all provacative and say that Thigpen should be the starter for the rest of the season, even though I'm not a huge fan. I was gonna say that Huard isn't the future and we're not going to the playoffs anyway and the guy at least has some wheels and he's young so he should get an opportunity no matter how many incompletions he throws to my neice in the first row (and yes, her black eye is doing much better...thanks for asking). I was gonna say he deserved to get every single snap in practice and that Damon should go on holding that clipboard...on the sideline...

Now I have nothing to offer! Oh the humanity! *slinks away with bushy tail between legs*

Seriously though, Thigpen showed me a little something Sunday. I was mildly impressed. He seemed more comfortable. Beyond the one play where he confused himself with Barry Sanders, he moved well, he only overthrew a couple receivers and he showed a strong arm.

Considering that I've completely given up on Brodie Croyle ever being an option at quarterback, I think he's our only choice right now.

And I feel bad for the guy. These aren't the kind of injuries where you question a guy's heart. It's not a "thigh bruise" or a "strained pinkie," he's had real, honest-to-goodness injuries. ACL tears, cracked ribs, separated shoulders...these aren't injuries one can fake. But he's just snake-bit. And I think the organization needs to move on.

Other stuff that needs a discussin':

  • I stand by my first post on this site with a few exceptions. Niswanger has taken a serious step backward in my eyes. And I still think Carr is the superior of the two corners (at least at this point). And don't bother arguing that "Flowers is a prototypical Cover 2 corner" unless you're gonna actually explain why you think that's so. Carr is big, fast, strong and tackles well. Flowers is showing good coverage skill but has missed several key tackles which is a real no-no in the Cover 2.
  • The other youngsters are holding their own respective to their levels of experience, I think, including Herb Taylor. Anyone else notice how pass protection improved when he replaced McIntosh for two series? When he and Albert were out there, most of the pressure was coming from the center-right of the line where we continue to lead the league in "starts by a fat chick."
  • Hali has sooooooooooooooooo peaked.
  • We have the worst linebacking corps in the league. And it's not even close. The only one I'd even consider keeping next year is Johnson and that's only if he's the weakest link in a strong unit. Again, I know we all like the guy, but just lease that DVR your wife won't let you have and watch him play. The vast majority of the time he's just as badly out of position as the rest of the bunch. And spare me the "it's the system" argument. The Cover 2 isn't some exotic, far-out, rarely used system. It's a very simple system that relies on linebackers who are able to maintain their gaps and get deep when they need to. None of our linebackers appear to be capable of either of those things.
  • Staying on the linebacker subject, did anyone else want to tear their eyes out and feed them to a pack of ravenous wolf-people watching Demorrio Williams against the Titans? Twice I watched him push "It's" Pat Thomas farther to the right just to watch the Titans run to the defense's left. Of course, after Mr. Williams' helpful adjustement, all three linebackers were overly committed before the ball was even snapped which is something they certainly don't need any help doing. And if I have to watch either Thomas or Williams (or both) run headlong into a mountain of sweaty man-meat on one side of the line or the other as the opposing half back scitters up the middle with that dazed look of shocked surprise one...more...time...I think I'll scream.
  • As an aside, those first two defensive series in the second half were an example of how to play linebacker in this system. All three of them stayed in their gaps and made plays. It looked like a different team. Too bad they can't remember to do that all game long.
  • Cut Bernard Pollard. Cut him now. Scores 3-0 in the first. It's 3rd and 8 at the Titan 49. THIRD AND EIGHT! Titans call a draw and Chris Johnson makes Pollard his ever-loving bitch. Bernie didn't even touch him! The result? 13 yards and a first down. In my eyes, that was the play where the Titans started to take over. It just broke the defense's back. BTW, another guy missed a tackle on that play too. I'll let you guess who this "protypical" player might be. ;)
  • Erik Walden has moved into my "keeper" category. In fact, the whole of special teams is a keeper. Savage is playing well. And the Chiefs are quietly ranked tenth in kickoff returns, twelfth in kickoff coverage and fourth in punt coverage. This gives me hope for the future.
  • Did I mention our linebackers are really...just terrible. Really.
  • Cut...Bernard...Pollard.
  • That is all XD

Yeah

Pollard is a bum, and Tamba needs to go along with him. While we’re at it let’s get rid of Pat Thomas and McBride too.

and keep McIntosh?

"But what do I know, I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO"

by Lanier63 on Oct 23, 2008 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe not McBride

Unlike Tamba, I don’t think Turk has peaked yet. I think he’s got some potential that needs to be explored.

Further, I wouldn’t just dump Hali. He proved he can play when Jared was here. He just needs to be at LE and we just need someone on the other side to take pressure off of him.

Cutting Pollard is ridiculous!

If anything he needs to be moved to the linebacker position. He can play.Just ask Tom Brady. The unfortunate thing is that doing so leaves you with rookie DeJaun Morgan and John McGraw as replacements. Not very appealing.

true enough...

…but I don’t see how starting DeJaun Morgan is any worse than starting any of the other rookies out there.

And the Brady injury was a fluke. Yes, Pollard showed determination on the play but his technique is just terrible. Making him a linebacker (a position that involves even more tackling) would be a mistake in my opinion.

The Tom Brady comment was to be funny.

First of all. Let’s go over Pollard’s characteristics.
He is a BIG physical safety. Almost too big, infact he had to loose a lot of weight this year to try and speed up a little. He is faster than a lot of linebackers and slower than most safeties. His coverage is marginal, but he makes up for all of the shortcomings with his amazing ability to lay a ridiculous hit on you. Hence the nickname… BONECRUSHER. He would make a serviceable safety throughout his career. But if you make him a linebacker, I believe he would be great.

apologies

I missed the humor. I can be a little slow at times ;)

And yes, Pollard does make the odd big hit. But is the occasional “bone crushing” worth the frequent missed tackles? Not in my book.

I totally agree about Carr

He has been much better than I hoped for a 5th rounder. To get a solid starter that late is awesome! Plus I think that he has shown a lot of heart, which this team needs. He didn’t quit chasing Lendale on his 80 yard touchdown scamper all the way to the goal line. For such an inmportant position, I think our corners grade as one of the strengths of this team.

by TheQ on Oct 23, 2008 1:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

Don’t get me wrong. I like Brandon Flowers (he’s not the first inconsistent tackler playing cornerback and won’t be the last). I just think Carr is playing better right now. I think he’s a more complete player. Coming into the year, the worry was that Carr couldn’t cover. I think he’s answered that charge to a large extent. Bottom line, I think we’re set at corner for a while.

by Chief Running Bare on Oct 23, 2008 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

Flowers is good, but Carr has the size and speed you need in a NFL corner and maybe a little more upside.

I agree with a lot of it

But I take particular exception to Bernard Pollard. I think he’s one of the few bright spots on the defense.

Anyone who advocates cutting Pollard

(and in previous posts Derrick Johnson) from our defense, I will question their judgement

by KansasCityShuffle on Oct 23, 2008 4:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

care to explain yourself?

Are you just interested in belittling me or are you actually going to offer something of value to the conversation? You like Pollard and Johnson. Great! Now tell me why.

by Chief Running Bare on Oct 23, 2008 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Merely pointing out

that you’re advocating cutting arguably the top 2 defensive players on the team. Who is next on your list, Glenn Dorsey? By your standards we wouldn’t have a player left on the defensive side of the ball. You take DJ & Pollard and place them on a contending NFL team and I guarantee you they’d start. (Maybe a stretch for Bernard, but I believe it…)

Nothing personal towards ya, its just a “throw the baby out with the bath water” approach I get from ya. Doesn’t fly far with me

by KansasCityShuffle on Oct 24, 2008 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

okay...

…but I’m advocating cutting “arguably the top 2 defensive players on the” WORST “team.” Not ANY team. The WORST team. Glenn Dorsey isn’t next because Glenn Dorsey still has room to grow where, I believe, the two players you listed have topped out. If that’s the best we can expect from them, they don’t belong on this team or any other.

Beyond that, thanks for the thoughtful response ;)

I disagree with CBR

But I can see the point. Pollard is a big hit safety playing in a passing league. Roy Williams of Dallas was knocked for being the same type of player.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 23, 2008 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do like them...

I like Pollard, he has started to show alot better play this season…much improved…Like Prime said, he is a big-hit guy in a passing league, but he is getting better in pass coverage…NOW, in saying that he is a run stuffing safety we are obviously falling into a trap, as it was a big draw play that he allowed…but everyone makes mistakes like that sometimes, lets be less impulsive

As for DJ, I dont want to sound like Herm, ever, but I think it is just the case of him trying to make big plays and he gets caught out of position…This popped in my mind when he said Gun told him “just go…you are thinking too much….just play” and now he is thinking too little…ha…

With that said, I loved the post, I hope you write more often, it was funny and smartish…

Whoops!

Gave the wrong guy thanks for the compliment. Dur.

Anyway…thanks!

Page & Pollard too similar

IMO Page and Pollard are both aggressive, gambling players who go for the big hit and sometimes are out of position and miss tackles. If you had one of them paired with a play-it-safe guy who is a very sure tackler, it would probably work a lot better. But I don’t like having both safeties play that way.

In general, I want safeties who never miss tackles or blow assignments, to me that’s way more important than making the occasional bone-crushing hit. But if you have to have a gambling hitter out there, you can get by with one guy like that better than you can with two.

by Offense of the 70s on Oct 24, 2008 7:21 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Couldn't have said it better myself!

And thanks for the compliment. I’m glad somebody gets my (admittedly exotic) sense of humor ;)

by Chief Running Bare on Oct 25, 2008 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

One other thing

I think we need to make a distinction between a free safety (Pollard) who gambles too much and misses lots of tackles and a strong safety (Page) who has less responsibility in the pass and is a much more consistent tackler. Again, they both gamble, but I think you expect more of a tough-minded, run-supporting role from a SS than a guy who plays FS and is supposed by be a “safety valve/last-resort” guy in the pass.
