The Gunther Question...

I have heard a few people here and there claim that the recent performance of the defense should be enough to motivate one to add Gun to the list of names for people who need to be forcibly removed from their positions at One Arrowhead Drive. I wanted to get the organized opinions of you all and maybe offer mine as well. I think there are two ways to see the situation with Gun.

On one hand Gunther is an icon of sorts in Kansas City. Chiefs fans love Gunther. He is like our uncle that you can always tell has had a few before Thanksgiving dinner and always makes you laugh. He loves KC and we love him for the most part. Even the commentators Sunday recognized that Gunther is a man respected throughout KC and throughout the league. The consistent problems on defense could be due to personnel in a couple different ways. The defense got horrible (like...Broncos now) during the Vermeil Flying Circus era and Gun was brought back to fix it. His units showed improvement, especially with the arrival of Herman. It was only when his personnel was completely overhauled (THIS offseason) that his unit has not shown progress from the past season. AND, if you look at who is to blame for the performance I believe alot more responsibility lies on the players. At the beginnings of all the games our defenses have looked promising and even in some cases solid. It is only as the game progresses that they blow their coverages and miss tackles.

On the other hand, Gunther may be using his personality and the fans adoration to help his job security. He may have become inefficient but we all love him so we have not seen it necessary to call for his head, so to speak. The argument can easily be made that he has had plenty of time to turn this defense into a solid group. The defensive players can only get as good as their coaches instruct them to be. Poor teaching breeds God awful performance and it is time to bring in a new man.

What do you all think?

Goonther is not the problem...he's harder on himself than we can ever be on him.

This wouldn’t have been an issue if Jared was still in a KC uniform. A steady pass rush heals many a teams inadequacies. Our defense last year was decent, sure we had a lot of holes, but they kept us in a lot of games when our offense was quite offensive.

And that was with the personnel that did not especially fit the needs of the Cover 2 scheme (i.e. Nappy Harris & Ty Law) So pretty much Goonther is working again from scratch.
LB’s are the key to his Defenses, and 2 of the 3 starters are new(Thomas & Williams) The problem with our defense is that its taken awhile to finally find the pieces that fit together. Next year we maybe addressing the MLB position if Thomas continues to struggle. Last Sunday against the Broncos that LB corps looked like a unit who’s found its stride. They made plays, and that is why DJ is accepting honors for the AFC Def. Player of the week. Gun is the best D- Coordinator we had next to Bill Cowher.

The man still has it, he hasn’t fallen out of touch like Greg Robinson did.

I think we are seeing on the Defense

Just how long it takes to truely rebuild a team. Though this is the first season of rebuilding the offense, this is the third year for rebuilding the defense. The defense is most definately improve over what it was three years ago by the infusion of new talent, but it takes time to build quality depth and not every draft pick is going to be a superstar.

The loss of Jared Allen has undoubtedly hurt us as well. You don’t just plug a different guy into the same position and get the same superior performance. There was nothing that could be done about the JA situation and they made the best of it, but it was a hit to the unit no question.

Improvment can be seen all over, but it just takes time for everything to completely come together.

Gun

Gun’s defense needs swagger to be good. Young guys flying around and knocking your head off if you get in the way. AND a few older guys that are all pro types to lead the boys. Together they intimidate and kick hell out of those offensive pansies. We have the boys and are developing the all pros. Now we need the swagger. That is another reason Jared Allen was such a big loss.

Gunther

This is as superb coach with a very young defense. Oh and by the way
lost most his pass rush prior to the season and has a left end playing out of position IMO.

Improved every year

Since Gun came back to the Chiefs his defense has been better every year than the year before. Now he has a huge influx of young players and it takes time to get everyone playing like they need to.

Keep in mind we only have TWO players in the same position as last year 3 if you count Surtain (but I think he may have lost his job now).

D-line: Hali – switched positions; Tank & Turk – now starting; Dorsey -rookie

LBs: Thomas -new MLB; DJ – switched sides at olb; Williams – FA

CBs: The Brandons – 2 rookies

Saftey: Page & Pollard – in same positions

It takes time for the players to get comfortable with their positions and the guys around them, but if we keep seeing the progress through the season that we saw last week we will be a killer D. The 2 main weaknesses I see is pass rushin DEs and MLB.

Gunther NOT the problem

Not only is he endeared with Chiefs fans, but hated by our rivals. Gunther Cunningham is greatly respected in the NFL. There is no way that he has “lost it” and talk like that is just a way to lash out.

It seems to me that his defense is just getting to know itself. The rebuild is affecting the defense just as it has the entire team. It does take time. By week 16, our D will be much improved over last year, and next year will be even stronger. I do think he has done a great job with the talent and skills of the players we have on team. He can only teach and inspire, but the players have to play. Their experience and confidence is the key and will be the measure.

I would like to see another linebacker coach come in to allow Gun to be the overall Def coordinator again. I’d like to see him groom his replacement over the next few years, so that when we win the Super Bowl (in 3 years), he can retire on top and leave his legacy in a young new talented coach.

Lol...

I agree with you all…dont come after me for opening a discuission forum lol

I personally think if we released Gunther the team that would go after him would be Denver…and we would regret it for years…

I got your point

Actually, I thought you had a good post and like the perspective. No attack from me, just trying to emphasize my support. I just get too tired of the ones that are constantly throwing the bust, and fire words around. This year IS going to be great if measured in perspective to building our long term foundation. I’m really looking forward to these next two games. Our D has a good chance to really prove themselves and not regress.

He cares about the players

And KC.

So I can’t really expect more, can I?

I will say this though, for any of you who are calling for Carl and Herm's heads

Assuming Carl and Herm get the ax at the end of the season, what do you think the odds are that Chan and Gun keep thier jobs? Slim to none. It would be a very unusual thing for a GM and a Head Coach to be replaced and not to have almost the entire coaching staff turn over at the same time… I hope that if Carl is given his pink slip that Herm stays around till the end of his contract if for no other reason than to keep Chan and Gun here one more season to facillitate these youngsters growing…

I've always wondered

if Gunther were left completely alone to run the defense as he sees fit, would they be better? Gunther has built #1 defenses with KC and when he was in Tennessee. But he has kinda had to be a more conservative, cover 2 Herm-type defense, where he used to attack more. I like the attacking style of defense better, and I know he is trying to blend the two, but I have to wonder if it has had any effect? It is hard to have two conflicting philosophies.

Check the Fanshot Section

for a youtube vidoe of Gun.

Love the guy!

Great Video

Gun is so passionate about not only winning, but kickin there ass while there doin it. I love his attitude and he had to be good for motivating the young players. I am not so sure he couldn’t go out there and light somebody up.
Great quote during that viideo when Gun says, “Were either going to win or I am going to have a fucking heart attack. And let me tell you somethin, I ain’t have a heart attack any time soon.”

You gotta love that guy!!!!!

Good point Q

I would argue that Gunther is a lot less blitz happy than he was in previous seasons or even as head coach. Maybe some for the better in that situation. However, I think Gunther Cunningham without a doubt is the and I mean the best defensive coordinator when it comes to red zone defense. I guarantee you if we get that vital MLB for the cover two and our corners can play even better man to man than they are doing now our pass rush will come with more aggressive blitz schemes.

by chiefsfan1384 on Oct 2, 2008 11:30 PM CDT   0 recs

I think the lack of blitzing is attributed..

to the youth of the corners, than on Herms consevative approach. When Gun “let loose the dogs of war”…. on the opposing QB’s he had corners that he could trust like Hasty, Carter, & Lewis.

What does he have this year??? two rookies…. and Surtain, D..U..D..E.. I wouldn’t blitz either. Patrick slips too much (i.e. the Pats game)
