Tebow to D.Bo?

Nothing against Brodie Croyle, but he has proven he cannot stay healthy for a 16 game season. He has had a problem with injuries since high school, tearing TWO ACLs and his shoulder injuries.

Star-divide

For the two years, one quarterback in particular has caught my eye. Tim Tebow. He can pass, he can run, and has a great character, which is now important in today's NFL. From http://nfldraftdog.com/2009_NFL_Draft/Tim%20Tebow.htm,

The other aspect of Tebow’s game, his running ability, puts him in an elite category of a "dual threat" QB. Although most "dual threats" are known for their speed (i.e. Pat White of West Virginia) Tebow has more of a full backs mentality as he runs behind his pads and breaks tackles with ease. He has very good speed, but not necessarily a burner. Last year, he compiled 895 yards and 23 touchdowns. Most NCAA running backs aspire for those kinds of numbers. In his short 2 year career, he has rushed for 1364 yards on 299 carries (4.6 per carry), most of which were goal line situations in which a few yards were needed. Although NFL teams will be wary of the mileage this kid has, it is also note worthy that despite having a deep bruise on his shoulder and a broken (non-throwing) hand, he continued to play at high level…that durability is something that should ease NFL teams. Couple that with his numbers (both running and throwing) and the complexity of Coach Meyer’s offense, it makes him the most NFL ready QB. Coach Meyer also plans on limiting Tebow by implementing a 2 QB rotation to give him a breather. Tebow should be the first player selected when he does enter the draft. He has 2 years left, but with a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship ring, he has little left to accomplish. Look for him to avoid the injury bug and be the 1st pick chosen in the 2009 NFL Draft
What does everyone think of him? Other quarterbacks that have caught my eye are Colt McCoy and Curtis Painter. I believe Matt Stafford is a bust waiting to happen.

Tebow

I agree that we need another QB, and I’m not high on Stafford either. I’m not really sold on Tebow though, because I see him as another Vince Young-type who’ll struggle with the transition to the NFL. Personally I’d rate Graham Harrell, Painter, and Cullen Harper higher (although Harper is a Spurrier QB, so he definitely comes with a warning label).

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Where did you get Harper being a Spurrier QB?

Did he transfer out of South Carolina? Before starting for Clemson?

overrated

Harrell I think is way overrated. He will struggle in the NFL more than most of the other Big 12 QB’s that might be available (Daniel, Reising, McCoy, Bradford). Reising will probably stay at KU another year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see McCoy and Bradford test the NFL waters. McCoy and Bradford look like real deal prospects, size and talent wise. Daniel, Reising and Harrell are a little small and will probably struggle for it. I think Daniel and Reising are smarter and better than Harrell to boot. Of course that’s just my opinion.

I also think Tebow is overrated as well. He has the size, but I don’t know about his accuracy down field. He could be a fat Grossman in disguise. At least he has durability.

The problem with a lot of these guys is they are Spread QB’s that have lived in one system for a bulk of their careers. We have very little if any evidence of how they will perform under center. How fast will they adapt to the timing of drops and the footwork involved?

I like McCoy, especially after watching him this season. If Texas wins the Natty C, he may declare early. The guy is completing nearly 80% of his throws. If his guy is open, he hits him with a catchable ball. That is something we haven’t had around here in a while.

He's going pro

Plenty of athletes say that but he can get much, much more done in his missionary work if he goes pro.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 19, 2008 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm on the Harper bandwagon

Really like the guys abilities. Great suiter in the NFL. He is a Spurrier QB but that literally means nothing. People may think he’s a system guy, which the majority of college QB’s are but this kid is special. Also not sold on Stafford or Tebow although i like Stafford more. I do like Harell and Painter as well.

Spurrier QBs

Name the last one that was any good as a pro. Seriously…I can’t think of any QB who played under Spurrier at Florida that was any good in the pros. Shane Matthews had the longest career but he rarely played and when he did he was usually terrible.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Oct 19, 2008 1:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Again.

Cullen Harper plays at Clemson. Spurrier is the Coach at South Carolina.

Unless I’m missing something, I don’t think there is a correlation…

Also

I remember reading that Tebow didn’t want to play in the NFL. I wonder if he still feels that way.

tbow

i heard that rumor too, can anybody confirm what his post college plans are?

call me a MU fan, but chase daniels next year & maclin(off subject) whenever he decides to declare, 2010 or 2011

MU Fan

First it is Chase Daniel…no (s). Second he is not an NFL QB. Maclin can play on Sundays but Daniel no.

Daniel

He’ll be a mid round prospect. I don’t think he’ll ever do anything in the pros but he will get drafted.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 19, 2008 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

hmmm...

haven’t given that one a lot consideration. but that would be really fun to say, “d-bow to tebow,” so i think we should get him.

If he declares early I like Colt McCoy....

This junior has started for the Longhorns for 3 years, and he’s lighting up the scoreboards (avg. 48 pts a game). He’s shown a ton of leadership qualities, with improvements in his numbers for the 3 years he’s started for Texas.

by aPacificChief on Oct 19, 2008 3:29 AM CDT reply actions

I agree

Colt McCoy always seems to play at a high level. I’ve watched him since he was a redshirt freshman taking over for “Kerry Collins is starting over me” Young.

by thechiefsarrow on Oct 19, 2008 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

Dear God, no.

Tebow is, as I like to put it, a FB who can kind of throw. He does not have a good enough arm for the NFL, would be a pretty big project anyways, plus you have the whole missionary issue, where he has said that he wants to do missionary work after college.

If you want a QB out of this draft, which we kina sorta need, go with Colt McCoy, Mark SanchezMatthew Stafford (I like the kid…), Cullen Harper, Graham Harrell or Curtis Painter. And of course, my personal favorite is Sam Bradford, but I think he’s a lock to stay another year in college.

by rockchalk on Oct 19, 2008 1:53 PM CDT reply actions

Stafford

Other than that there are no guarantees. Colt McCoy? Unlikely. Tebow? Probably.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 19, 2008 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with Stafford

If you stop to think about it, Stafford does not have the big name explosive wide receivers that others do (Bradford-Iglesias or Tebow-Harvin) so the completions that he makes are from good throws rather than from receivers getting seperation

He also seems like he could withstand some of the punishment that would come along with being a Chiefs QB in the near future.

Chiefs

out to wait for McCoy.

Only one with the durability and passing ability to succeed in Kansas city. Tebow is a substandard passer.

+ a lot.

I love Mark Sanchez. And if we can get an awesome playmaker early, like Michael Johnson or Michael Crabtree, it would be really cool to get a QB as good as Sanchez in Round 2.

by rockchalk on Oct 19, 2008 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions

sweet

then I can make Dirty Sanchez jokes for the next few years

Sanchez is ok.. I’d rather have McCoy or Bradford – better conferences vs. better opponents and still putting up better numbers than Sanchez. Also, neither have had injury issues – not that Sanchez has a Croyle’esque injury history but he’s probably missed more games than McCoy and Bradford combined.

Pac-10 is closer to NFL than BIG12

I’m not trying to say that there is better football out west because the BIG 12 is on fire right now. But the PAC 10 has less of the spread and more closely resembles the NFL than the BIG 12. Also, being the best QB in a state like CA says something, thats quite the talent pool they’re drawing from. Sanchez is for real and, as of now, he’s still a second round pick. Couple him with a top 10 lineman and all of a sudden this offense is respectable.

by HIV 2 Elway on Oct 19, 2008 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah,

I am one of the Big 12’s biggest proponents, and it is painfully obvious to anybody that the BIg 12 is the best football conference in America this year. And they probably have the best batch of college QBs in the history of college football in one conference.

But, Sanchez is already running a ‘pro offense’ at USC, whereas McCoy is running a spread and Bradford is running a mix between the two, although his is fairly pro-style as well.

Don’t get me wrong. I still like Bradford more than Sanchez. But value-wise, I like Sanchez more, considering we’d have to talk Bradford early-1st and we could maybe get Sanchez in the second.

by rockchalk on Oct 19, 2008 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Sanchez doesn't have enough starts to warrent a selection higher than a 4th round

and that would be based on mere potential only. This year has been his primary call of duty.

In 2006 and 2007, he was a backup to J. D. Booty, has potential bust written all over him if he comes out for the ’09 draft. I think he might be better off staying in SC for another year. Might not have enough starts to be ready to play in the NFL.

Same for Bradford, he’s a redshirt sophmore. Needs more seasoning before he can take on the complex cover schemes of the NFL.

I think the only guy worth taking in the 1st round would be McCoy, and I don’t think at this point he’s worth a top 5 selection. Been watching his throws and some of them kinda flutter, don’t know if its because his footwork or for a lack of arm strength? (not a pro scout, but I did sleep at a holiday inn last night, Just my opinion)

The other QB’s (provided they all declare for the NFL) that might be worth a look are Josh Freeman, the guy looked huge. Watched a little bit of the game the other night, looked like they played him conservatively, so couldn’t really draw much of a conclusion on him, but his arm did look lively.

Harrell looks good, but all depends on his arm strength. He could be a steal in the 3rd round (not sold on the spread offense not translating well in the NFL, Big Ben played in similiar offense in college, and he didn’t turn out too bad.
Painter looks to be struggling, actually has regressed. Painter’s number have all gone opposite from the previous year, percentage of completions have gone down(‘07 62, ’08 56) and his TD to INT (’08 4TD/ 6ints, 2007 29 TD/11ints ) ratio has also been pretty bad.

My dream draft would be to take QB Colt McCoy (if he declares) with our top 5 selection, or if McCoy is not available trade down to around the 8-10 th selection and take MLB Rey Maualuga (Pick up at least a 3rd rounder from the trade down). With our second round pick take the best available O-lineman either a RG or RT. If we don’t address the QB position in the 1st round we take Harrell with the first of our two 3rd rounders, and use the other 3rd rounder on the best available athlete.
