While We've Got A GM That Can't Pull A Good Trade...
The Detroit Lions have a GM that can...a guy that we've discussed here before.
On Monday, the Lions were in a grim situation. After years of mismanagement by former GM Matt Millen, the last wobbly wheel was finally coming off the franchise. The Lions hadn't won a game this season, their quarterback had a back injury that had him heading to injured reserve, their offense and defense had bottomed out, and one of their best players (a former Pro Bowler whose numbers had dropped the last couple of years who was schedule to become an unrestricted free agent) was allegedly making waves about wanting to be traded to a contender...but only to one in Texas. In essence, a very similar (albeit certainly not identical) situation to what the Chiefs have been facing.
Then, after a week of publicly denying that his player was on the block or that he was shopping him around (despite numerous stories and rumors to the contrary), and after claiming that he'd only take a trade for the player if other teams started by offering a first-round draft pick, the new Lions' GM was able to unload his disgruntled, underachieving wide receiver for three draft picks, including a first rounder. In one swift move, by exercising tact and savvy, the general manager of the Lions was able to squeeze an absolutely brilliant return out of a player that most questioned to be worthy of even a first round pick. Whereas in Kansas City, the player who asked to be traded, who most people thought wasn't worthy of the second round pick the Kansas City GM asked for, went nowhere at the trade deadline and is now helping to cause an uncomfortable situation for his head coach.
Which leaves open the question...why can't our GM get the value he assesses a player at in trade like the Detroit Lions' GM can?

Tact, savvy and...
…the Lions!?
It’s strange hearing those words together in the same sentence. But, I’m in agreement with you. The Lions got excellent value out of Williams, a WR (the position that historically has little impact but is rising).
Now the Lions, like the Chiefs, need to determine who will be making the decision on those picks in 2009. Unfortunately for us Martin Mayhew may have found himself a job with the Lions (unless Ford goes down the tubes even further and the WCF family has to sell the team and a new GM is picked by the new owner. Hey, we can dream!).

Not sure if he was mentioned in the other article
but I like Nick Caserio from the Patriots as our next GM. Here is the link to his bio

To post a link
Whatever word(s) you want to be hyperlinked….
Type them.
Then highlight the words and click the little chain link at the top of the comment box and a box will come up. Paste the link in there, hit okay and you’ve got yourself a link.
A clean link for a clear mind.

Caserio
Very interesting prospect. He seems to be more interested in working on the field, though…he became receivers coach. And apparently Scott Pioli may be available and I like him more than Caserio. But that’s a good find, Jason…he definitely seems to be a GM prospect. The guy who’s current head of player personnel in Green Bay was somebody I was reading about earlier too. They’ve had some success and he may be looking for a new job.
Plenty of good young candidates out there and maybe we ought to be looking for them and seeing if we can come up with more ideas than the team (or the other fan sites) on who ought to be running the club.

Let me know what you think, my shortlist:
Nick Caserio NE Director of Player Personnel
Jon Sandusky PHI Director of Player Personnel
Larry Wright JAX Asst Director of Player Personnel
They are all younger guys, so experience might be a problem, but if you look at our front office it looks like an old folks home.

I'll Have To Give You Feedback Tonight
Not enough time today to do in-depth lookups. But those are all teams that have done well in the drafting and have built good rosters (except Cleveland, but they aren’t horrible) so they’re probably all decent candidates.
And I agree with you about having to look for younger guys. People often toss out the names of guys who’ve been GMs before because, well, they just happen to know the names. But most of the time what you get with a GM who’s done the job before is a GM who tends to give your team the same weaknesses that his previous team had…repeating the past instead of looking to the future. That’s why a lot of coaches, GMs, etc. aren’t as successful in their second stints as in their first (at least in my opinion).

If only I knew his number in Fiji
or Dallas, either way he knows about as much about the current Chiefs as those people do on the light rail commercials.

I Don't Think He's That Disengaged
He apparently attends meetings frequently to get an understanding of what’s going on, he just stays quiet. And he stated before the season that he’s watching the results of the coordinators and coaches we brought in because he wants to evaluate what he was told they were going to produce with what they actually produce.
I think Clark Hunt is very much aware of the state his team is in, and I think he’ll address it after the season is over. He may address Carl’s situation before then but my prediction is that Carl Peterson will not be working for the Chiefs by the time the 2009 draft rolls around.

I hope you are right on all fronts
but until I see him in front of a mic addressing this team, I don’t know what to believe.

All I Have To Go On
Is this article.
But he made the right comments in that article for me to believe that Clark Hunt not weighing in right now does not mean he’s not paying attention to this football team.

But He Got About What People Said He Should Have
And a defensive end of Allen’s caliber is tougher to find than a wide receiver like Williams. And the Lions got as much value in return for Williams as we got for Allen.

And
Because Mayhew didn’t value Williams at more than the market would bear, nor did he tell the player he’d trade him and then fail to come through. Carl did both of those things. That’s the difference between a good GM and a bad GM…a good GM doesn’t make a bad situation worse by botching how he handled it like Carl botched how he handled Gonzalez.

Makes you think...
…Does Carl not understand (as Herm has admitted) how people use the internet?
Does he really believe that he can keep everything “hush-hush” and that the truth will not come out?
Is he that naive where he thinks he can pull a fast one on Tony by telling him “we tried to trade you but the offers weren’t good enough” even though we can clearly see that the Eagles offered more then what Carl wanted when they were turned down the first time?
Seriously, being in a position soooo public, he has the audacity, nay the unmitigated gall to try to pull this. Like Tony said, he should have just said up front that he wasn’t going to trade him.

Honesty Is Usually The Best Policy
And now that lack of honesty is going to cause problems.
And I completely agree with you…it’s unbelieveable how clueless Peterson is when it comes to the modern information age. This stuff always gets out. I guess all those years of never having to worry about losing his job have given Peterson a sense of invulnerability when it comes to his own b.s.

Agreed
Of course you’d also think that a coach would bench Damion McIntosh after watching him play, but that hasn’t happened either.
I’m starting to think that coaching football isn’t really as hard as it’s made out to be.

…that’s why they’re called “COORDINATORS”…they (Chiefs coaches) make sure the players uniforms match before gametime. Sheeesh UC, do I have to explain everything! ;-)

Did you take
It that way to? That seemed like a good way of dodging any responsibilty. Well not a good way, I have never heard him accept any responsibilty for the state of the team.

Who, Herm?
Only time I’ve ever heard him accept responsibility for doing a bad job was during “Hard Knocks” after a preseason loss. The rest of the time it’s some variation on “the players have to play.”

Jared Allen?
I didn’t see anybody saying we should have gotten three draft picks for a player that was fresh off two DUIs. Most articles I read said the Vikings got robbed. Especially considering Allen only has three sacks in six games, on schedule for an 8 sack season.
by ChiefDJ on Oct 15, 2008 5:31 PM CDT 0 recs
Us too
Hes not getting sacks but at least he’s putting pressure on the QB. We can’t even do that. :(
Actually one of those sacks shouldn’t even count. He was chasing a backup QB that was going out of his own 1 yard line and the guy forgot where he was on the field and ran out the back of the endzone. Jared got credit for the sack and safety, but really was about 8 yards away from him.
He was pointing and laughing as the guy did it. It really was quite funny.
