D doesnt always win Championships
Im not a big stat guy so im going to try and make this as short and sweet as I can.
Herms a defensive minded coach and thats good but to me D doesnt take you all the way. You've got to have an offense and actually put TD's and not FG's on the scoreboard.
here are some stats I found online from the Ravens D over the last couple years.
2001 Points allowed per game (16.6) 4th best in NFL take/give aways [-8] 23rd best that year they lost in the 1st round of the playoffs
2003 (17.6) 6th [+3] 9th lost in wildcard
2004 (16.8) 6th [+11] 5th no playoff appearance
2005 (18.7) 10th [-10] 28th no playoff appearance
2006 (12.6) 1st [+17] 1st lost in 1st round
sorry Im at work and didnt have time to find pass/rush yards but the point im trying to prove is even with a D that can shut out opponents you still have to be able to score. To me these are the most important stats anyway how much you let the other team score and how well you take care of the ball yourself.
sorry its a pretty sloppy post.

Well...
D is by far more of a factor in winning a championship than offense. There was only one team to win a superbowl with a below average defense and a high octane offense and that was the St. Louis Rams. (they won by a yard) You guys honestly believe Herm doesn’t want to score points? We need a consistent running game first before we can start throwing it over the field. Our offense is in desperate need of power blockers on the right side as we all know. If we fill that RT, RG spot than I believe we could have a dominant running game. Look at the Titans, they probably have the best defense in the league right now with a offense that can run the ball and they are undefeated.

Giants have a strong D
But they also have one of the top offenses in the league.

Yeah listen...
balance is good their is no doubt. But, if you looks at the Giants they had their priorities right. First, they established a defensive front seven that could get to the quarterback. Then, they put together probably the best offensive line in the league. Then, they got a quarterback and helped him by providing a running game. Then, the last thing they did to put them over the top was to get him some weapons in Plaxico and Smith, while suring up the defensive secondary by drafting Aaron Ross.

Aaron Ross
Got burnt pretty good by Braylon Edwards! The Brownies are giving the G-men hell. I wonder if Coughlin is thinking" what could a hall of fame tight end do for me right now?" There is no substitute for points.

That
was a nice route however. Ross is an aggresive cornerback and jumoed the route looking for the pick, and ended up being burnt deep for it. CB is the most difficult position in football (except QB) and everyone will make mistakes.
Aaron Ross is an extremely talented individual that will be a top 10 corner in this league eventually.
Most people on here don’t know, but I am a bit of a Texas fan, giving my reason for defending Ross so quickly.
Okla-homo who?
- baby!

No need for defense
Was not attacking him, just pointing out a big play.

How many interceptions has Manning thrown?

You still have to stop teams
Even the year the Colts won there defense stepped it up. They won because of tough defense through the playoffs. If you can’t stop anyone it doesn’t matter how many points you score, IE the 2003 Chiefs.

I remember sitting at my house the night the Bronco's lost AT home
And fireworks started going off. It was…something memorable.
Kansas City really does love the Chiefs. The town turns red on Sunday.
I miss that atmosphere.

I was in disbelief of the day.
I was at the game when they showed the Steelers win right at the end of the game.
Awesome day. People don’t understand it where I live now. I live in Florida and all they know about the Chiefs is what they are doing now. They don’t understand how I can subject myself to a losing team. All I can say is I am a fan.

If you score no points it is a mute point.
Score points with mediocre defense, who can get the needed stop can also get you there.

Both are required
I will see if I can find it but I believe that no team has won the super bowl in the last 20 years without BOTH sides being in the top half of the league.

Ok here are the stats for the SB winners, last 20 years
These are the scoring ranks not yardage ranks because really yards don’t tell the story, points do.
There were only 3 times that one side of the ball or other was out of the top half of the NFL, twice in the last year, I have put these in bold. I noticed there is a lot more fluxuation the last few years (2000 and on). I also saw that in more years the offense was the stronger side of the super bowl winning team.
Season Team Off Def (scoring ranks)
2007 NYG 14th 17th
2006 Indy 2nd 23rd
2005 Pittsburgh 9th 3rd
2004 NE 4th 2nd
2003 NE 12th 1st
2002 TB 18th 1st
2001 NE 6th 6th
2000 Balt 14th 1st
1999 St. L 1st 4th
1998 Den 2nd 8th
1997 Den 1st 6th
1996 GB 1st 1st
1995 Dallas 3rd 3rd
1994 49ers 1st 6th
1993 Dallas 2nd 2nd
1992 Dallas 2nd 5th
1991 Wash 1st 2nd
1990 NYG 13th 1st
1989 49ers 1st 3rd
1988 49ers 1st 3rd
Average Ranking 5th 5th
- of times ranked 1st 7 5
- of times stronger side 10 6 (4 times tied)

The Giants and Colts
are misleading because as we all know those defenses took on new life in the post season. Its also interesting to see see how the teams in the 80s and 90s were so dominant on both sides of the ball and the 2000s there is more disparity. I think this league has become increasingly more competitive.
