Chiefs Will Honor Tony Gonzalez On Sunday; Trade Not A Likelihood?
In what could be described (depending on how you view the Chiefs' management) as either a foreshadowing of Gonzalez's future after Tuesday, an unbelieveably late gesture of appreciation towards one of the club's greatest players, or a really sick joke, the Chiefs announced that they'll be honoring Tony Gonzalez during Sunday's game for his accomplishment during the Panthers game of becoming the greatest tight end in NFL history.
The club today announced plans to honor Gonzalez with a pre-game tribute before Sunday's game against Tennessee in recognition of his setting the NFL record for most career receiving yards by a tight end.
Which begs the question, if Tony Gonzalez is about to be traded, how will he be expected to show up for Sunday's game unless we're trading him to the Titans? Buffalo and New York will both be playing at the same time the Chiefs game against Tennessee will be going on, and it's unlikely that either team will want their newest acquisition skipping a game in the midst of the playoff hunt, so if he's traded the Chiefs will be having a celebration of Tony Gonzalez's accomplishments without Tony Gonzalez.
Unless this is the Chiefs' way of saying that it's not likely that Gonzalez is going anywhere at the trading deadline. Which I hope is the case, because if not it's just unbelieveable how screwed up this franchise has become.
I'm going to be optimistic though, and say that the timing of this announcement is the Chiefs saying that Tony Gonzalez isn't getting traded.

You beat me to the post, as usual.
How will that factor in if he is traded?

I'm Thinking That This Is Peterson and Herm Saying They're Not Trading Tony
Because I seriously doubt that even those guys are dumb enough to schedule an appreciation day for one of their greatest players if they figured he wasn’t going to be there.
The only team brainless enough to do that that I can think of was the Royals on Frank White Day. They had a pre-game ceremony for him, then John Wathan benched him, and after the game said that he didn’t realize it was Frank White Day .

They said they would honor him
When he broke the record.
After the Denver game they said something along these lines.

If They Were Planning On Trading Him This Week
I doubt they’d announce the day before the trade deadline that they’ll be having the celebration the following week when they know he’s not going to be there. Carl Peterson’s an ass on many fronts, but not when he does stuff like commemorating players who are the face of the franchise. He had Derrick Thomas lying in state at Arrowhead, I don’t think he’ll do a Tony Gonzalez Day without Tony Gonzalez. Even I’m not anti-Peterson enough to believe he’d do something that crass.

Or
He’s pressuring other teams involved to get a deal done.

I Don't Think He'd Do That Either
Gonzalez was sore enough about the lack of recognition for the record as it was, plus fans are likely going to be buying tickets this week with the idea that the Chiefs will be holding the celebration for Tony Gonzalez. If they do that without Gonzalez being there I think a lot of people are going to feel pissed and cheated…rightfully so.

I thought that too
he would have a press conference if he thought it would help get the deal done.

The chances of a trade going down are slim
The Chiefs aren’t going to just give away one of their best players, especially since they don’t really WANT to trade him. They’d much rather have the rest of the season to get things worked out so they can make a case to Tony in the offseason to convince him to stick around.
Until there is a reason to doubt it, the Chiefs will go on with business as usual.

I Don't Think It'll Happen Either
The timing of this announcement lends support to Gonzalez staying here the rest of the year.

Why would he want
To hang around here? It is clear the Chiefs are not going to be contenders for at least two more years. He is more apt to get injured in this trainwreck of an offense, and then have nothing to show for his years of hard work.

It would be strange
If this trade doesn’t go through. I mean they’re professionals but I’d be very interested to see the dynamic of the team if he came back after this became such a public ordeal.

I'd Hardly Say He's Got Nothing
He’s broken every receiving record for a tight end, he’s an icon here, and he’ll be a first ballot Hall-of-Famer and that’s if his career ended today.
Will he win a Super Bowl with the Chiefs? It’s not looking likely, but then a lot of great players never won a Super Bowl or had much playoff success. Didn’t make Barry Sanders any less of a great running back. Didn’t make Fran Tarkenton or Dan Marino any less of a great QB.

Yeah it did
Super Bowls are the only argument for picking Joe Montana over Marino or Brady over Marino.

Actually Joe Montana's Superior Passing Numbers Would Be More Persuasive
He was a better passer than Marino, but his yardage totals were lower because his team had a balanced offense (although Marino was a slightly better deep passer).

But Not Enough To Keep Him From Being A Great QB
As for Marino, I don’t think the rings take anything away from him. It wasn’t his fault he didn’t win a Super Bowl…that was on Shula the GM. For about a decade of Marino’s career he didn’t have a single running back who got 4 yards a carry for the team in a season, and for most of his career he never had a defense. If you check out the Miami team stats over his tenure there, the support he got was abysmal.

You know what
I mean UC, he has got all the records sure. He wants the ring to go along with those accomplishments. Who can blame him? If you were him, would you want to stay here in offense hell?

I Think I'd Fall More In The Brian Waters Mold
I’d rather play somewhere I’m happy and try to make them win. But I agree that it’s not a likelihood with things the way they are and I’m not him or in his position so I don’t really hold his decision against him.
But like I said, I’m going to side with the Chiefs first on this deal and I think it’s actually in their best interests for the next few years to keep Gonzalez rather than trade him. And it still won’t make Tony Gonzalez any less of a great player if he doesn’t win a Super Bowl here.

They're A Pretty Good Team This Year
I think they’re taking the AFC East. Very solid defense, good running game and a decent passing game. So they may make a Super Bowl.

Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton
were great players regardless if they never won a Super Bowl, that’s true. But what is the one thing that they do have in common other than not winning a Super Bowl? Their teams all made it to the playoffs, and enjoyed some sort of success. Two of the three names mentioned also were able to make it to the Super Bowl.
Tony on the other hand has only three playoff losses to show for his twelve years. He’s more in the Archie Manning category, so unless Tony’s son makes it to the NFL, and can make it to the SuperBowl. Tony will never have experienced how it felt to be in the big game.
