Jared Allen Invites Tony Gonzalez To Minnesota; Possibly Violates League Tampering Rules
I'm going to preface this by saying that Jared Allen was an excellent player for us. He worked hard, produced on the field, and was only partly to blame for the situation that resulted in his trade to the Vikings. I liked having him on our team.
That said, Jared Allen also always struck me as a colossal dumbass who was prone to exercising extremely poor judgment in regards to his actions and comments. And now he's validated that opinion by attempting to recruit Tony Gonzalez to Minnesota.
Former Chief Jared Allen sent a text message Saturday night to his old friend Tony G after hearing that Tony G is looking to be traded.
Allen told the St. Paul Pioneer Press, "I said, 'You want to get traded, man?' I was joking with him. Then I said, 'Why don't you come join me in Minnesota?' "
Which, of course could constitute a violation of the NFL rules against player tampering, as explained by the league's senior VP of public relations Greg Aiello to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:
"Out of our anti-tampering policy, the term tampering as used within the NFL refers to any interference by a member club with the employer/employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce the person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL."
The comment from Aiello was, of course, made in response to the Brett Favre saga from this offseason, in which Minnesota offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was accused of inducing Favre to come out of retirement, thereby putting the Packers in the unenviable position of having to trade away their franchise QB after an acrimonious war of words.
The NFL found that the Vikings had not tampered in that case by attempting to induce Favre to come play for the Vikings, but that appeared to be based on a lack of evidence that Bevell had made such an overture to Favre. Allen's case would seem to be a little more clear cut since he openly admitted asking Tony Gonzalez to come to Minnesota. Based on Roger Goodell's track record with rules violations, I think it's safe to say that should the Chiefs decide to file a complaint Goodell will be none too pleased with having to have this discussion with the same team twice in one year.
You'd think that the Vikings would have been smart enough to educate their employees about the pitfalls of this sort of thing after narrowly avoiding the axe the first time. But apparently not, and if the NFL does investigate this and does decide that Allen's actions constitute a violation, this could very well end up benefiting the Chiefs by gaining us draft picks from the Vikings as compensation (as happened with the 49ers when they were forced to swap picks with the Bears for improperly contacting Lance Briggs' agent during the season).
I guess all you can really say is, well played Jared...well played. Your team is definitely getting value out of signing you long-term.

Joking
Does it matter that the report said Allen was just joking with his friend. I suspect not but I imagine that would be their response to that.

I Don't Think That Will Fly
Especially not with all the crap that happened this summer regarding the Vikings and Favre. Once may be indicative of nothing going on. Twice is indicative of either a pattern or the Vikings’ negligence in educating their employees on anti-tampering guidelines. I doubt that Allen bragging about it in the paper will go over big either with the league office.

Jared Allen + Tony G does not = employee/employer relationship
no tampering. I think.

The Tampering Rule Is
That a club and their employees (to include the players) may not attempt to induce players under contract to other teams to seek employment with their club. He said he was only joking at first.
Clubs have gotten punished for less and violations of tampering rules appear to be a pet peeve of Goodell’s.

No Such Thing
It’s prison rules in the NFL…your buddy is only your buddy as long as it’s beneficial to have him as a buddy. Once the benefit of him being your buddy is outweighed by the benefit of not having to be his buddy, it’s time to shank him in the yard. :)

Haha
Still, I would think the Chiefs would have more class than that. But still, that extra draft pick would be nice.

I Don't Think Any Team Is That Classy
Especially since Jared Allen has spent a significant portion of this season talking trash about his old club with no apparent guidance from the Vikings telling him to knock it off.
So screw them. :)

Nothing Personal Against The Vikings, When I Say That
Just that given a choice, I’d rather see the Chiefs get the Vikings’ draft pick rather than see the Vikings have a good impression of the Chiefs. It’s competition, not a love-in, after all. :)

And then...
…Jared took another swig from his bottle of brew with a chaser while the “18 year old” dancer entertained him as he handed over $20 bills…and everything was right in the world.
Jared further commented:
“We really demolished Detroit 12-10 and they are a better team then their record shows”
“Maybe if Tony comes up,we can all get together on a house boat we have here in Minnesota like we did the night before the game.” “The defensive guys here really know how to party”.
Tony G. again did not respond although he was thinking to himself that it must be a conincidence that the beverage stock was rising at Boulevard Brewery since Jared left. A foreshadow of things to come in K.C.’s bleak sports and adult beverage economy. No fans left to drink the new Kool-Aid brew.
Tony read the text again and thought to himself
…“we weren’t that tight”
and promptly deleted the text as he rushed to meet his rep for a conference call with the Buffalo Bills.

Probably not tampering
Jared even said he texted Tony after hearing about the situation.
Tony requested a trade and the Chiefs gave him the approval to explore opportunities. The Chiefs would have no recourse as it occurred after they gave him permission to speak with other teams.

Question
Did the Chiefs actually grant Gonzalez permission to talk to other teams or did the Chiefs tell Gonzalez that they’ll try to honor his trade request?

I heard radio reports that his agent, Tom Condon was talking to teams
Much like everything the Chiefs do, they say nothing to the public until the event is over…if then.
If Condon is talking to teams, then he would have to have permission to do so.

Guess We'll See What The Chiefs Say On It
Since it was reported prominently in the Star I doubt that it will slip their notice.

The Distinction Being
That if Tony Gonzalez was given permission to seek trades himself (like Joe Horn was) then it may not be tampering, but if Gonzalez was only told that the Chiefs would try to work a trade for him it seems as though Jared Allen’s comments would represent a violation of the rules (since it has the potential to unduly influence the Chiefs’ trade negotiations with other teams).

That is a valid distinction
Without word from Arrowhead, I can only speculate that the reports on Condon are true and he (and Tony) thus has permission.
But what do you expect with a GM that refuses to release contract details on players, even though the contracts are made public once approved by the league? Or how they blatantly lied about LJ’s foot injury the entire final half of last season?
Essentially, I don’t know. :)

The only interpretation of tampering
that matters is Mr. Goodell’s.

And He's Already Had To Deal With The Vikings Pulling This Kind Of Crap Once
So hopefully he’ll be more disposed to give compensation if it’s a second offense. :)

So if we lose a player through trade,
is there a compensatory pick (NFL Draft) given to the team who has lost players to other clubs?
by aPacificChief on Oct 13, 2008 4:00 PM CDT 0 recs
Only In Free Agency
Not in trades. In trades you’re only compensated with what you’re given by the other team at the time of the trade.

I hated that we got to the point where he had to leave but I’ll hand it to Peterson, he got a good return on him in trade.

still wished we got something more for the 2009 draft from the JA trade.
Two number ones and 3. Would of been much easier a pill to swallow. Or even a 1 and 3 in ‘08 with a 2 and 5 in 2009 would of been an excellent deal. But we all know Carl doesn’t have much of a poker face.
Instead of a just a 1st rd and two 3’s in the last draft, but at least we didn’t get ripped off so it wasen’t too bad.
So if we do trade Tony G., that would make only Brian Waters as our sole Pro-Bowler (while as a Chief) on roster.
