Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Week 6 Gameday Thread

Our beloved Chiefs aren't playing today but as they say, the show must go on.  Here's some reading material for the morning.

  • RockMNation walks us through Missouri's loss last night in their post game podcast.
  • Jason Whitlock on the possibility of a Tony Gonzalez trade: "But the Giants’ front office, sitting on a Super Bowl title and feeling no urgency to win, isn’t all that interested in giving Kansas City fair compensation."
  • Joe Posnanski on the possibility of a trade not getting done: "At one point this season, Gonzalez told me he would retire at the end of the year rather than go through this kind of losing again. At another point, he admitted that he could not see any light at the end of the tunnel. Again, he said these things quietly, away from the cameras, and he asked me not to write it yet."
  • Bob Gretz tells us that Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Green Bay, Philadelphia and New York are interested in Gonzalez.
  • Bigknoxy shares a video with us that is, uh, interesting to say the least.
  • From the mothership on our rookies from prominent college teams accepting losing.

Use this thread for any and all football talk.  I am headed to Austin next week for the MU/Texas game so last night was a big let down for me as I was anticipating a potential #1 vs. #3 matchup.

I heard it on the

Fox pre-game show. They were talking about the TG trade possibilities, and he threw that out there also. Sorry just repeating what I have directly from Jay on T.V.

I hear ya

I don’t really pay attention to comments like that very often. If he had any real sources to back that up then it would be posted already.

It's already a rough week

Chicago, Skins, and the Vikings just squeaked out my survival

by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Oct 12, 2008 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Chicago-Atlanta

Just made my day in fantasy football. I had Orton as my starting QB and he had a decent game, and Elam was my kicker (and he had a great game). Both of them outscored Adrian Peterson, whose owner is playing against me this week.

I wish we had Matt Ryan.

That is all.

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 12, 2008 3:15 PM CDT reply actions

If We Had Ryan

He’d be done after a couple of games with the line we’ve got, or Herm’s insanely stupid offense would wreck his development. He’s working in a very good system for him this year (run by a good offensive coordinator in Mike Mularkey and a head coach who’s willing to open things up).

I was thinking about this while watching the game and came to the conclusion that Matt Ryan would never have looked this good with the Chiefs this season…mainly because Herm’s playcalling would have wrecked his confidence or Herm’s line would have gotten him knocked out with injury. We got a very promising player in Dorsey so I think we’ll be fine long-term so long as we dump the losers currently running the team.

Thanks for killing the joy

even in my “Matt Ryan on the Chiefs” dream.

I'm Happy With Dorsey

There will be other QBs, but DTs with Glenn Dorsey’s skills are just as hard to find if not harder.

And I think we’ll find one once we dump Carl Peterson.

Ryan is successful

Because the Falcons can run the ball.

On the rare occassions the Chiefs are able to run, their QBs look 10 times better as well.

It all starts with being able to run.

by ChiefDJ on Oct 12, 2008 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I wasn't even making criticism of Dorsey

or our team. I just like the kid’s moxy. He’s got a strong arm, leadership, and huge, huge balls. I just wish we had him.

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 12, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying anything bad about Ryan

I’m just saying the Falcons are a succesful running team and if you can do that it makes the rest of your offense look great.

Damon Huard looked like Joe Montana against Denver when LJ was running for 200 yards. He looked worse than Tyler Thigpen against the Panthers when LJ couldnt get going.

The two are directly related and a great running game can make a mediocre QB look fantastic.

by ChiefDJ on Oct 12, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

While I don't agree that everything starts with being able to run

there is certainly ample evidence for your beliefs.

We'll See

He may work out, he may not. Even Grossman looked outstanding for half a season. Let’s see how he looks once the league adjusts to him for a full year.

Jeez

that’s pretty critical. We said the same thing after week 1, and after he beat us. He may also be proof that the best quarterback in a bad QB draft can be good.

22-30 For 300 yards?

I remember when our quarterbacks had lines like that. Years ago.

Also shows

YOUNG teams can win, carry on. Rookie coach, rookie qb, and rookie left tackle. Really starts to take that we are young argument out of the picture. Ryan looks like the real deal.

by Eric Allen on Oct 12, 2008 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Now That's Definitely True

I don’t buy the idea that teams bottom out when they go younger. You’re adding more talent to the equation, not less. When a team’s as bad as the Chiefs are this year I think the reason should be focused a little higher up than the players.

by UCrawford on Oct 12, 2008 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Every situation is different

It depends on what pieces are left over from the previous regime that are playing well and how well the young players you bring in do.

No team has had to scrape the roster clean to the extent the Chiefs have.

by ChiefDJ on Oct 12, 2008 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Blah.Blah,Blah

They have alot of young players as well. Their HC quit on them last year, do not want to hear about leftovers. You refuse to open your eyes to the possibility, Herm is not HC material.

by Eric Allen on Oct 12, 2008 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

The falcons have been rebuilding for a looong time too

Also, consider that without Jason “Monday Night Jihad” Elam, the Falcons easily coulda lost that.

Elam’s can’t have that many more years in the tank. Of course I’d rather have Elam than the ghost of Medlock, but that’s a different whine.

O-Line, o-line, o-line.

by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Oct 12, 2008 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

the rookie qb made the throw to get them in position to win it with a fg. One second left, pretty impressive!

by Eric Allen on Oct 12, 2008 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Best Thing About That Game

I had Elam as my kicker. He put up 17 points for me…outscoring Adrian Peterson (who my team’s playing against).

Frankly it doesn't matter

Right now he IS the head coach and will likely still be the head coach next year as well.

Like it or not, we’re going to see if I’m right or not.

In fact, I’ll say now that he won’t be here by the time we draft in 2009.

Bullshit

The Falcons dumped their starting running back, their top defensive back, their starting tight end, their starting left tackle, and one of their starting linebackers.

Know what the difference between them and us was? The free agents they brought in to fill holes weren’t complete scrubs like the guys Herm brought in. Pretty tough to field a competitive team when you sign Adrian Jones to be one of your starters.
