# 8?!?!?!? REALLY!??!
I just got finished watching my DVR'd "Top Ten Tight Ends" from NFL Films...and it has absolutely left me bewildered...Tony Gonzalez, the man who holds every major Tight End record there is, who has never really played with an above average QB, is NUMBER 8?!?!?!?!?
And since Tony is in the news anyhow I thought it was topical...
While on this topic, it may be either just a Tony appreciation exercise or maybe a cathartic farewell (for now) depending on what happens in the next few days but I would like to hear where everyone thinks he ranks....all time...

I’ll say about Tony what Bum Phillips said about Earl Campbell. “If he is not in a class by himself it sure don’t take long to call roll!”

When was it made?
I remember seeing something like that but it was made like 3 years ago.
There’s no question TG is the greatest tight end of all time but get used to people knocking him down because Sharpe has 2 SBs.

Sharpe has 3 SB's
2 with the donkeys and 1 with the Ravens

.....
It wasnt that old…it was within the last year because it gave him credit for the TD record which he set last year…I think, unless it said TD’s in a season…not sure…but still
I put him up there with Winslow, Mackey, Ditka and them…Sharpe was an H-back type TE who couldnt block for nothing….and so on…

Wait...
How can you say that Trent Green wasn’t an above average QB when our offense was one of the most dominating around 2002-2005?

That's true
But that was only for 5 years. The rest of the time he had Bono, Grbac, Huard and Croyle throwing to him.

Green
…I would still argue he was not really above average…I think you could put an average guy in there with that running game and that O-Line and he would look good…

I agree
Green was a good QB no doubt, but he also had the best offensive line in the NFL and a great running game.
Those two things will greatly improve whoever you have playing QB.

He shouldn't be #8
But it should also be pointed out that the stats of today are drastically different due to offensive environments, thus inflating offensive stats today (much like today’s baseball hitters hit many more home runs than they did in the 60s). There were some great tight ends back in the 70s that didn’t put up the gaudy numbers that Tony G did because the game was simply a much different game.
