Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

The Chiefs gave up on the veteran kick returner. They released him today to make roster room for Mark Bradley.

Sams averaged 20 yards per kickoff return and 8.3 yards per punt return in his brief time with the Chiefs.

Dantrell Savage will take over as the punt returner. It's still unclear whether Savage or Jamaal Charles will be the lead kickoff returner.

Agree

even before last week, when one could argue that Savage and Sams were neck-and-neck, I have no freakin’ idea why we kept them both. If they truly were equal, then Savage’s age should have won it for him.

I was willing to give it some time

Because Sams is still fairly young and has had success in the past. But I think Savage proved himself with the long return Sunday and taking that massive hit where he lost his helmet, but not the ball.

We have to look at the timeline here too.

They gave Sams three games to show what he could do and he did nothing so they cut him.

The Chiefs now have three games to see what Savage can do before Robinson comes off the PUP. If Savage doesn’t show much, I suspsect we’ll see Robinson in there for the Jets game.

But I Think Savage Will Stick Around, Regardless

He may get some time at RB gradually and spot duty at returner. Biggest waste with B.J. Sams was that he was an underwhelming returner and he didn’t appear to be able to add anything anywhere else.

Yup

The longer he’s out, the more I wonder if he’ll even be around next season. Late round picks with injury issues don’t generally get cut too many breaks.

He'll get one

only because we drafted him as a return specialist…I’d like to see what the kid can do for one game once he is healthy…he sounded pretty exciting in at the college level.

Utah State

That’s the dregs of college football right there. They went 2-10 last season and Robinson got all of 640 yards. The dude never even cracked 700 yards in his college career and his ypr were good but not particularly great.

If he wants to stick around next season he’d better be putting up Dante Hall Pro Bowl year type numbers real soon.

Utah State is a bad team but

These are the stats that matter:

2007 – 20 punt returns for 378 yards (18.9 avg.) with a TD and a school-record 43 kickoff returns for 1,260 yards (29.3 avg.) with three TDs

This is nice too -

At the end of the 2007 season, Robinson became the NCAA career all-purpose yards per play record holder with a 16.16 average on 6,479 career yards in 401 plays.

Don’t think he’s probably being looked at as a WR very seriously, right now they want him for his return ability.

Agreed

A team like the Chiefs really can’t afford to carry guys who only can only return kicks and nothing else.

THANK YOU CHIEFS FRONT OFFICE ME LUV U LONG TIME

WOW

An intelligent move by our front office. Are you sure Carl is still running the team?

by CBaller13 on Oct 1, 2008 1:14 PM CDT reply actions

What really upsets me about this whole thing

Is that we all knew BJ sucked (pardon the pun) before the regular season began.

Maurice Price was looking good, maybe good enough to make the final roster cuts, and we had to send him to the PS so that we could carry BJ. In the meantime, Price goes to NE.

Now we’ve decided (finally), that BJ DOES INDEEN SUCK and Price is gone so they bring in Mark Bradley. I don’t know much about him, maybe he’s better than Price, but I KNOW Price looked good during the preseason…

by KCFanatic on Oct 1, 2008 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

I think main reason they shipped Price to the practice squad was he was injured

And couldn’t play anyway. Thats actually how we got him. He was with another team and got cut because of injuries so we picked him up. Guys got to stay healthy.

by ChiefDJ on Oct 1, 2008 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

This is true

and I wasn’t aware of that, however I wonder why they didn’t PUP him or something then?

by KCFanatic on Oct 1, 2008 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

If he's on the PUP he can't play for 6 games

I don’t think they figured he’d be out that long. Let’s face it, he looked good in preseason, but so do a lot of other guys that you never hear of in the regular season. Our #2 WR is doing good to get a pass a game thrown his way, what difference does it really make who our 5th WR is?

by ChiefDJ on Oct 1, 2008 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Well we got another receiver,

Now can we just get someone to consistently get them the ball downfield. We could pick-up T.O., and it really would not matter, Brodie has the arm accuracy questionable. Damon, can make short to mild intermediate throws.

I suppose

showing Novak the door would be asking to much since they’re trying to fix things that are broke..

Barth's Still Available

I’m all for correcting that error :)

+1

Novak sickens me every time I see him kick… although he did put a couple of kick offs in the end zone on Sunday…

by KCFanatic on Oct 1, 2008 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Still

I’d rather see him put the ball between the goal posts:)

by REMWHEN on Oct 1, 2008 4:57 PM CDT reply actions

And the goal posts are going elsewhere

Maybe once upon a windy day somewhere in NW Missouri, but I don’t believe that Novak is better than Connor Barth AND Jay Feely. Just don’t.
