*****HUARD NAMED STARTER*****

ESPN is reporting that the Chiefs have named Damon Huard their starting quarterback for this season.  From the looks of it, it appears Huard didn't really win the job, but Croyle lost it.  I'm sure this is going to lead to a debate throughout the season, and I'll go on record now saying I disagree with the decision.

crap crap crap crap
this is true, i will be super pissed off. i love damon huard, but we are going to be pretty bad with or without him at QB. we might as well build for the future with croyle, and it makes little to no sense that huard is our starter.

stupid carl peterson probably played a role in the decision...

Dumb move
We're not making the playoffs. Let me repeat that (I'm looking at you Herm), The Chiefs are not making the playoffs this season. So, with that out of the way, why are we starting a 34 year old journeyman quarterback? He played well last year and that's awesome, but I feel that his coach will turn into a pumpkin when the clock strikes noon in Houston in week 1. Let the young kid play and if he's just too much to bear, then you can plug in Huard. Three preseason games are not enough to banish Brodie away to clipboard duties. That's my $.02 anyway.

Why start with Croyle then pull him?
That makes no sense.  I like this move in the fact that when Damon a)struggles b) gets hurt or c) Herm thinks Brodie is ready, our offensive line will have hopefully gelled at that point.  why ruin this kids confidence at the start of the season when we are playing top 10 Defenses like the Bears and Vikings.  Let Huard trot out there keep the turnovers to a minimum and give us a shot at winning.  Brodie will start at some point this season unless Huard plays like he did last season.  I know Brodie is our future but he has really disappointed in the preseason (I know its the preseason but teams also aren't coming at him with full defensive schemes yet either, and look at what he has done) so let him watch Damon for a few weeks or the whole season, Because "You play to win the Game"

WE WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR!

My concern
is that I don't think Huard will get pulled unless he's god-awful, and I don't think any fan wants that, regardless of who you want the quarterback to be.  How is Brodie supposed to get ready by taking snaps with the second-teamers and running plays against our own defense?  I think the only way for Brodie to learn is through actual game time experience, which isn't going to happen with Huard out there.  I just think that by starting Huard you accomplish very little, because won't we be facing this exact situation one year from now?  Not to mention, even if Huard struggles, Herm has shown that he won't pull the starting quarterback regardless of how bad he plays (see Trent Green vs. the Colts), so why should I have any faith that even if Brodie does play himself into a position to be the starter during the season that Herm will make the switch?

Disagree

I disagree with that.  Trent was the starter on this team and unquestioned leader of the team.  You should always put the player out there that gives you the best chance to win, and in a playoff game like that, you have to go with the experienced veteran.  Which is also why I think Herm made the best decision by starting Huard over Croyle.  Put the guy out there that gives you the best chance to win--that's undoubtedly Huard.

I'm not questiong Trent starting
what I'm questioning is that Trent obviously struggled against the Colts, and by halftime had accomplished nothing.  Going into that game, Herm had said something along the lines that he wouldn't hesitate to pull a starter if he wasn't playing well, and put in the guy who gave the Chiefs the best opportunity to win.  Trent was obviously struggling, and at worst, Huard would have played as bad as him, but we'll never know because Herm didn't make the move.  My concern lies with the fact that Herm didn't give Huard a shot to give the Chiefs a chance to win that game when Green was obviously struggling, and playing us out of that game.  What's to make me think that Herm won't make that mistake again? If Huard struggles, is he going to leave him out there again, rather than give Brodie a shot?  I think this is even more important to the future of this franchise than that playoff game, because it has more signifficant consequences for the development of this team's hopes at winning in the future.

I understand you think the guy who gives this team the best chance to win today should be the starter, but I'm looking at the bigger picture, and I believe the guy who gives this team the best chance to win a CHAMPIONSHIP is Croyle.  By playing Huard, you're only hampering his development and hurting this teams chances of winning a championship, and isn't that more important than a 9-7 record?
