Facing Reality: The Chiefs Will Not Make the Playoffs

I know we're only two games out of first place but doesn't it feel like about five? Four straight losses will do that to your psyche.

Team Rec Mean Wins #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 DIV BYE WC TOT
SD 6-5 9.2 0.00% 0.30% 13.50% 69.50% 0.00% 1.30% 83.40% 0.30% 1.40% 84.80%

We didn't really need Football Outsiders to tell us that the Chiefs aren't going to make the playoffs but here are the odds anyway. The numbers across the top refer to playoff seeds and the TOT at the end refers to the chances of a team getting any playoff spot. Forget about a wild card spot. The Chiefs would need to overtake the Chargers and win the division to make it in.

This brings up an interesting quandry. While I'll always cheer for the Chiefs to win each and every game, does the lack of a playoff chase change your view of what direction the team should take the rest of the season? Are we still playing to win each game (or not to lose in Herm's case) no matter what? Or are we still trying to win but with our eyes looking towards next year?

Not to be overly optimistic
but let's see those percentages after we beat the Chargers on Sunday (ours wont go up much but I bet theirs drops a lot)...but no way do you stop trying to win to get a better draft pick just because you have nearly no chance of making the playoffs.  Once we are absolutely definitively eliminated from the post-season, ala the Faiders, then we can start the quandry talk.

You don't stop trying to win...
But you play some young guys to get the the experience they need and to see what you really have.  If you lose a few more games and move up in the draft, so be it.
I'd like to see what Brackenridge and Patterson can offer at corner.

We are already seeing Brackenridge
and Sapp in there fairly often...if Patterson gets thrown in too, great.

might as well start Tyler & McBride as well
and Herb Taylor.  The offensive line can't get much worse, and I think Boone & Edwards may be slowing down anyway

And hell yeah play Herb Taylor!
he could be asleep and play better than Chris Terry

Tank & Turk
have both been rotating in and are probably playing almost as much as Edwards (the fat one, not the great one or the coach one).  I think Tank will continue to see more time as he improves his technique, he is the run stopping boulder we need in the middle.  Turk is really an end, and has only been playing tackle on 3rd and long situations.  Anybody else think we have a shot at drafting Dorsey with our first pick next year?  Man would that be a line...Hali, Tyler, Dorsey, Allen (young too...as of next season they would be 3rd year, 2nd year, rookie, 4th year).

I HOPE he is the stopper
if not, after Dorsey, d-tackles may be kind of scarce in the 08 draft.  Far deeper in O tackles this year.

Which we also need
though I think we need a RT more than a LT.  And RT is probably a 2nd, 3rd round pick, leaving us that 1st pick for Dorsey or a CB (though I would go with Dorsey...a great d-line could make Sapp and Brackenridge look like Pro Bowlers)

I think
Dorsey will be at least top ten, if not higher.

Yeah...
and we could get him...(remember, we could go 4-12, which would give us a shot at him)

Dorsey
The dude is a bit injury prone.  I think you need to draft O-line with nearly every pick the first day.  This team is bad enough to be in a position to take Long out of Michigan.

Definitely
Depending on whose available and such, offensive line MUST be our top priority.

Taylor
We need to see if he can handle right guard, move McIntosh to right tackle, and try to draft a franchise left tackle and plug him in Niswanger is probably Casey's replacement.
