Big Cable vs. NFL Network
Starting this Thursday, the NFL Network will get weekly games on Thursday nights. Last year, the Chiefs were the beneficiaries of the new NFL Network, playing beating the Denver Broncos weeks before the death of Lamar Hunt. However, the majority of the country was unable to see that game because the big cable companies (mainly Time Warner and Comcast which account for 70% of the viewers) couldn't strike a deal with the NFL Network to air the game. The only loser here is the consumer. I thought competition was good for the consumer?
Anyway, there are two different sides to this story. Stealing a bit from MMQB this is what Jerry Jones had to say:
"We offer the cable company several minutes of advertising inventory on NFL Network. Every hour of every day they receive commercial time where they sell the ads and keep all the revenue. And in an effort to be better partners, we even set aside extra commercial inventory during our highly rated NFL games. Each cable operator gets 18 30-second ads during these games and they keep all the revenue from those too. Why do they have to charge the fans?
"Ask the fans this: Would you trade in three shopping channels, the Versus Network and Turner Classic Movies for the opportunity to have one channel in this country dedicated to football year-round? We offer a tremendous array of football-related content, the most popular programming in the country, and we do it for the cost to the cable operator of less than one movie ticket a year per subscriber. Would you rather go see one movie in the theater for two hours or have 24/7 year-round access to football?"
The only problem I see with this is that the Network would basically turn into ESPNews. A lot of re-runs. I would want the channel during draft month and the next 8 Thursdays. But, the value the cable companies are putting on the Network is more than that of CNN, FoxNews, and other big news sites. You can't tell me, even as popular as the NFL is, that more people would be watching the NFL Network than CNN.
If I had to guess, this won't be solved this season. Eventually, something's gotta give. The FCC will probably get involved and force a deal between the two. But for now, those of us without the Dish, will have to go to sports bars to catch the battle for NFC supremacy (Green Bay vs. Dallas) and the Patriots quest for perfection (week 17 game against NY Giants). Unfortunately, this tiff between the two corporations is hurting the consumer.
Any Dish subscribers out there who wish to tell us how wonderful (or terrible) the NFL Network is?

Networks, arghhh!
- You don't know stupid networks until you try and watch the Chiefs in NYC with all the black outs. You end up in sports bar whatever!
- I like VERSUS it shows Tour de France and Rugby World cup games.

Sports bars...
I'll actually go back 3 weeks and say Packers fans are legit good people that while staunch fans are knowledgeable 'good people' with enough class not to start applauding at a relatively meaningless first quarter offsides call and the like.
For the Broncos game, I kid you not, I was actually seated behind a flamingly gay (this is not a joke or a metaphor) Broncos fan. Now, the Parade's no homophobe, hell, look at the Parade's name, if you want to be a gay football fan be my guest, I mean that's gotta be a rough life cause most football fans aren't nearly as open-minded towards humanity. That said, I imagine the conditions I had for watching that game was about the closest thing I can imagine to hell.
First, sports bars suck cause you're paying too much for beer which is a requisite for football, and then everytime you're team fails theres a group of strangers celebrating. Then, for some godforsaken reason, non-football fans [cough girls] seem to think it's a good place to "socialize" [aka pick up dudes that don't really care about the game].
So, I'm stuck in this purgatory, the gf is mad at me for unrelated reasons [also, not a chiefs fan so I'm not allowed to show emotion for the game either]. Then these donkey fans sit in front of me. All yuppies wearing douchey skiing related clothes and t-shirts purchased at fashionable male to look like eurotrash. The girls look like washed out ski-bunnies and get up to smoke every 5 minutes or the second something important is happening. Basically, all scum. Then the Chiefs faithful was relatively thin but at least all wearing red or Royals stuff or something. Then there's this gay dude who is just totally flaming and giving out spritely high fives to the whole pack yuppie future pony-tail wearing ski scum in front of me. And seriously, it sucks when some dudes girlfriend is watching her second football game and going nuts after every single first down, but this guy, I mean again if you want to be a gay football fan fine, more power to you, but the point of watching a football team is to see who wins the game and how, not to find as many excuses as possible to get up and high five people. They just THREW a review flag, you can celebrate like Prince in about 5 seconds if the call goes your way, until then, sit in your G.D. seat.
Then came Indy, talk about filth. The Parade already made it's point about the Colts being cartoon Nazis. These are cartoon Nazi fans! Seriously, it's like a goatee and loser frat guy convention. And of course everyone of them has some butterface or flip flop fatty girl wearing a manning jersey. Who are you people seriously??? Normally I don't taunt the other team or talk trash but I let a couple slide for these Db's. One, they are the epitome of bandwagon fans which is to say they expect nothing less than perfection of their team (see rams fans post-Vermeil). Two, the all have their gf's because they went to superbowl parties last year, and could care less about the game. The Chiefs faithful for this one was pathetically the Parade, the gf [in a much better mood] and a guy I'd seen before who looks like a grown up Bobby Hill, clearly, this is the highlight of his week. Anyway, outnumbered and surrounded by Coltsbags the Parade stood tall. After remaining silent for most of the 1st quarter amid the claps and moans of said Coltsbags [again maybe it's just the Parade, but getting overly worked up in 1st quarter over anything not truly game changing or badass seems like poor sports bar/mixed-fans etiquette]. Anyway, coiling myself to strike I sat silent sipping my beer taking pleasure in the Colts failure against the Chiefs D, until it happened. On either the first or second sack the shot of Manning in the pocket looked like he was basically caught and he just dropped in the pocket on his own without anyone touching him. Following the slow motion replay, and the waning follow-up Coltbag groans I utter one word not yelled but just loud and firm enough to carry across the bar...
COWARD.
And the looks I got, that friends, is satisfaction.
Later on, after Dungy threw the challenge flag on the Croyle to D. Bowe TD, and didn't get it, I slipped a little. In the Parade's defense, this was after quite a few more beers. I let out a "aww, better bust out the crowd noise CDs Tony!"
Poor form I know, but I could just smell there collective joy and the hope that our second year QB's best TD pass to our rookie receiver would be nullified.
I also was giving out death stares during those final kneel outs as if to convey "Is this what you want? You happy super bowl champs to beat a 4-5 team like this, you Db's gettin yer rocks off watchin me an Kige Bobby Hill Ramsey here watch our team fight tooth and nail to have you cowards kneel into a chip shot? Man up Opie, put it in the endzone." God I wanted Vinetieri to blow one more kick.
Anyway, sports bars suck.
P.S. Following the game I got accosted by Bolts fan who informed me that if he "was at Jack Murphy stadium I'd jump the fence and put a .38 against Norv Turners head and pull the trigger." I didn't ask him why a .38, but from the looks of him he'd made the threat to other people before. Norv, if you're reading this, be careful.

NFL Network
I now can watch the NFL Network & The Big 10 Network. Time Warner still doesn't carry either channel. I now have FSN Detroit which carries the Tigers and Piston games. Time Warner is awful!!
I urge customers to switch to Dish or DirecTV.
