The Kansas City Chiefs Play the Colts Tight but Lose the Game

The Chiefs lose by three points to an anemic Colts' offense.

Brodie Croyle looked pretty damn good in my opinion. The defense finally got back to playing at a very high level.

The offensive play calling was frustrating to watch, especially since the skills of Croyle and Bowe were prominently on display today. We have weapons on offense. We just need to call plays for them.

Another great open thread today. My laptop still won't connect to the internet so I apologize for not being around.

I'm off to start the game recap and check out the last few minutes of the San Diego/Jacksonville game. Feel free to use this thread to comment on the remaining games today as well.

Playoffs
It seems no matter how hard we try we can't get out of the "race" for the AFC West.

It reminds me of the South Park episode where everyone is trying to lose so they don't have to play baseball anymore.

Brodie...UNLEASHED!

We can still win the division
SD lost as well.

Denver/Tennessee on Monday night.

For those who say we'll be one and done
Does this Indy game show that we can at least hang with pretty much any team (save NE)?  We went into their place and outplayed them.  I don't want to give up on the season and just get a good draft pick.  I want to make the playoffs.  Call it blind optimism, but if we can play the Colts like that, it's worth believing we can win this thing.

Primetime
you came on board the Brodie train, and that worked out pretty well.

I'm on the "Win in the playoffs" train.

With Croyle at the helm, and him actually looking DBowe first, we have a great shot at winning in the first round. From there, things get harder.

I will say that the Colts will get Harrison and Ugoh back and be a whole lot better, especially in the playoffs. But we showed a lot today.

If only there was a way to trade up for a draft pick...

There's a reason the Chiefs play in MISSOURI.

The most amazing field goal
I've ever seen just happened in the Browns game. It hit the left upright, hit the support bar behind the cross bar and bounced back through the uprights into the end zone.

They called it bad initially but reversed the call. Overtime now.

Reasons
The Reason Why We Lost:
  • With over a minute left in the 1st half and at least two timeouts left for us, we decide to play conservative garbage and run the clock out. If we had gotten into field goal range, we could have at least tried to get the lead before the end of the half, which would have made the Colts winning field goal at the end only a tying field goal.
  • Our kicker is terrible.
  • Really, all offensive play calling is putrid.

Fear
Chiefs lose because the coaches were afraid to unleash Croyle.  Plain and simple.

Defense played awesome.

Croyle was consistent and made very good judgments.

Solari ran the ball every friggin first down and every 3rd and long.

Chiefs coaches lost the game because they were afraid to let the QB make a mistake instead of losing because he made one.

Solari is all to blame for this one.

Couldn't
have said it better, team looked great, coaches looked hesitant.

Pat surtain- un-surtian?  4-6 and still should win this division.

3 big ones
We've got three straight division games coming up.  We've showed we can beat any team in this division.  But will we.

Frustrating
We moved the ball when Croyle was in shotgun and not playing a predictable offense.  Particularly on our first TD drive.  Croyle looked down field.  This will be a very interesting situation that plays out this season.  I know it's been one game, but the Chiefs might have snagged a good one.  This is a complete reversal of what I thought of Croyle before I saw him play.

Overall
i like how fast Brodie gets his feet set and delivers, he brings exitement to the whole offfensive unit. It's obvious the playcalling was the worst part of our gameplan today, and Priest proved his age, as far as injuries are concerned. D Johnson looked like the best positional player on the team, except mabe D-bowe- TG, and Pat Surtain got exploited all day long. The defensive line looked exceptional, even the tackles. Last three games, should have won 2, we're a little better than 4-6!!

Im starting to question Herms's all defence, no offence scheme.

What defence?

by D Thomas on Nov 18, 2007 4:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He moves his feet
while in the pocket.  Something Huard didn't do much of.  He was a sitting duck.

I'm really shocked that Croyle looked so comfortable in there.  Like he had done that before.  It's a good sign.

that impressed me, too.
on the sideline and in the huddle, the kid was cool as a cucumber. No shakes, no nervousness, no uncertainty. He knows what he's there to do, and he's ready to do it.

I really want to see the Brodie haters come out this week. I called my Dad (50 year Chiefs fan), and asked him what he thought.

"God, can you imagine if we'd had him in the first 8 games?"

There's a reason the Chiefs play in MISSOURI.

Brodie can't improve the O-line
The coaches were so worried about having a new guy playing QB that they forgot our offensive line still can't block for the run.

Priest Holmes runs up the back of his linemen the same way LJ does.

The definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Mike Solari is clearly insane.

by DJ on Nov 18, 2007 6:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

O-line needs rebuilding
Croyle looks good, too bad that OL wasn't emphasized in the last 2 or 3 drafts.  Replacing Hall of Famers will take time, a talented young QB shouldn't be hindered by an OL that needs to be rebuilt.  No need to repeat the David Carr scenario.

by Arctic Bronco on Nov 18, 2007 9:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

re: David Carr scenario
Agreed.  At least give him a chance.  If he's going to fail, let it be on his own accord.  If he's going to succeed, let it be on his own merit.  If we don't at least give him a shot, we're wasting our money here.

good game
gunther is an amazing defensive coordinator even if he sucks as a head coach....  and you guys look like you may have a good QB coming along... they had croyle playing safe, but he didn't rattle and make dumb mistakes...

jacksonville did you a favour too and your division is still close..

is it true?
have we actually drafted a competent quarterback?

it would appear to be so.  can't wait to see what we do with the three divisional games in the next 3 weeks.  too early for a 3-0 prediction?  that would put us at 7-6, most likely atop the division.

Calm
Of course I am upset that we lost.  But our future looks BRIGHT!

The defense played like studs!!

This weekend is so HUGE!!  Missouri & then the Oakland game.  Anyone going to both?  We are going to the Oakland game.  I think I may take my 5YO son.  I can NOT wait for next Saturday.  I know we have fans from both sides of the Border on the Blog.  This is the biggest game of my lifetime.

Go Chiefs!
Go Tigers!

You play to win the game!

we should
and should being the key word, be able to put up more than 12 on the Faiders this time around...if our defense plays that way the rest of the season, we may never give up more than 13 any of teh next 6 games...we have to win the next 3

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 18, 2007 6:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If our defense plays that way
then we should win the whole damn thing.  That was one of Peyton's worst games in his career.  He was harassed all day long.  the DBs were in on every play.  If our defense plays like that against any other team (save NE), we are going to win.

3rd and 18
Do you think other teams have figured out that we are going to run a draw?Too conservative that is what deflates these guys,Herm says he is worried about turning the ball over.Hell throw it up and let TG or DBOWE go up and get it.There is more to this Offense if they would just open it up.Score fast the defense is not getting much rest anyway.

Solari
is the biggest loser. On the draw on 3rd and 18, why NOT throw the ball deep? Even if brodie throws a pick, the ball will most likely end up like it would on a big punt, or a touchback at most. However, tonight Jessica Alba will take a seat in my dreams and Brodie will be there, him and that sexy cannon hes got for an arm. He looks real good. Today I watched the chiefs with my friend for the first time, and all he could say at the start was how he hated brodie, but by the end of the game he was chanting bro bro. To put an outside perspective on things, that is how well brodie played.

Our most pressing concern this off season is not to get new lineman, but instead to get an offensive cordinator. Yes our o line sucks, but as we saw today, if we call the right plays (3 step drops anyone?) then we can avoid it. Lucky for us, we can address both in the offseason to the fullest extent.

Anyways, thats just what I saw on the game, cant wait for next week for you guys to all get worked up over this game.

PS if Jessica Alba is on here for some weird reason, I was joking, please call me!!!

Tought call
On the draw on 3rd and 18, why NOT throw the ball deep?

If we're thinking of the same play, we were protecting the 3 point lead.  Rookie QB, Herm is conservative, why risk it?

I would bet that the chances of him throwing a pick are higher than him completing a 3rd and 18.  Conservative football kept us in that game.

Now, do I agree with the call?  Definitely not, we brought in Croyle b/c he can complete passes like that.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 19, 2007 2:10 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree
Brodie making throws on that touchdown drive and playing go for broke defense kept us in that game.

The most impressive thing...
Was when Brodie fumbled before the half and then bounced back and had that "Montana-esque" drive.  That impressed me.  Dave Rayner was pretty weak, but most of all can we all agree that the Colts are the biggest P words east of the Mississippi.

Seriously, the Colts were AFRAID of the Chiefs otherwise they would of gone for the TD and 7 points.  Let's consider that, the COLTS were AFRAID of the Chiefs.  They deserved that loss to SD and I hope Vineteri (sp? I don't care) bites them in the ass again.  What cowards.

Colts
I didn't like being on the receiving end of what the Colts did at the end of the game but that is an awesome example of how you REALLY play to win the game.

Bad conservative play = running a draw on 3rd and 18.

Good conservative play = running 3 minutes off the clock while you're inside the 5 yard line and kicking a field goal, giving your opponent 4 seconds to try to tie.

Sure the Colts could have easily scored a touchdown there.  In fact it would have been smart for the Chiefs Defense to just let them in so they had time to get the ball back.  But if youre interested in winning the game, Tony Dungy made a great call.

by DJ on Nov 18, 2007 11:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No way...
we shouldn't have been in that position, but you never give them a TD...What we did wrong is not throw the hail mary...sure the likelihood of it working are slim, but there is always a chance, maybe even a pass interference call which would make it 1st and goal at the 1 with no time on the clock.

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 19, 2007 8:02 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That was a great drive
"Montana-esque" may be taking it too far, but I know what you mean.  That should be a wake up call to Solari as well.  He opened up the offense a bit and we moved the damn football.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 19, 2007 2:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not that it will do any good
but we should start a petition to reinstate Solari as the O-line coach so he can rebuild the line in to  at least some watered-down version of what we had in 02-03...I don't want an Al Saunders type offense again, but we have to do something different.
