Open Gameday Thread - Kansas City Chiefs (3-3) v. Oakland Raiders (2-3)

 VS.

When: 3:05 PM

Where: McAfee Coliseum, Oakland, CA

The Raiders on SB Nation: Silver and Black Pride

Weather: High of 74, Lots of sun

Before we get started, make sure you read the official Arrowhead Pride game preview. Also, there's lots of misc. Raider info in the post Scouting the Raiders.

This is it Chiefs fans. The away half of one of the best rivalries in football. The Chiefs will prevail today.

I'll be here during the game, as usual. Before then, I will be conducting my own version of the eventual Raider beat down with some pals in a pick up football game. Seriously, nobody can cover me.

I don't know about the weather where you are but Kansas City's weather this morning would be tough to beat anywhere in the world right now. 71 degrees and a strong breeze.

The Kansas City Chiefs will march into the black hole this afternoon and march out with a win. Larry will have his best game in terms of yards per carry and Tony Gonzalez will go over 100 yards receiving. Again. The Oakland offense will threaten at times but never find a rhythm. The Chiefs defense will sack Daunte Culpepper four times. The Chiefs win 27 to 17.

GO CHIEFS!!!

Perfect day.
Supposed to rain tonight or something.

Agreed on your prediction.  Jared Allen can certainly do some damage to their O-line.  Their O-line is getting better as a unit, but they're still not the Cowboys of the early 90s.

by primetime 07 on Oct 21, 2007 9:30 AM CDT   0 recs

Chiefs victory, of course
We'll give up a long touchdown (either pass or run, don't know don't care), but other than that I'm thinking only field goals.  The Chiefs will score on defense, LJ will hopefully be a little motivated by priest's return but i'm not holding my breath, 2 touchdowns between d-bow and TG.  Final score: 24-13 Chiefs.  Oh, and I'm calling it: 5+ on sacks.
GO CHIEFS!!!

Go Chiefs
Big day for TG & D Bowe - their secondary is suspect.

Go Chiefs!!!

You play to win the game!

by tailgateandwin on Oct 21, 2007 11:08 AM CDT   0 recs

have you not seen their secondary play?
or do you not know good football when you see it?

oaklands secondary is the strength of their entire team. it is an excellent unit, definitely one of the top 5 in the nfl, maybe even the best.

nmadi asoghuma (sp?) is one of the best cbs in the nfl, champ bailey is the best but he might be the second best.

Just read on rotoworld
that the Chiefs eventually plan to give Priest Holmes up to 15 touches a game. Is it just me or does that seem like a ton of time for him?

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 11:43 AM CDT   0 recs

That's a lot.
I can't see that happening.  I'm still with the mindset of I'll believe it when I see it.  Fool me once, Priest..

CHIEFS
Lets get it done today and takeover 1st in the division!

by Zach on Oct 21, 2007 2:09 PM CDT   0 recs

Let's get it on!
I wasn't around for the Len Dawson spear or any of the other cheap shots the Raiders have dished out over the years but I did grow up in the Marty era and that's all I needed to learn a healthy hatred for the thugs in silver and black.  They've lost something like 16 straight AFC West games and they can lose 16 more for all I care.  From their slimy owner on down I have no use for any of them and I love the fact that we're about to be the first team to beat them nine times in a row.

by Pauli on Oct 21, 2007 2:58 PM CDT   0 recs

Anyone see
Arizona miss that kick to lose the game? They even recovered an onside kick with twenty one seconds left.

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:05 PM CDT   0 recs

Kickoff
Touchback.

Lets go CHIEFS!

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:06 PM CDT   0 recs

One first down rushing
Hope there's more of that.

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:08 PM CDT   0 recs

Dwayne Bowe
is a playmaker. Damn!

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:09 PM CDT   0 recs

Great start
LJ getting loose, amazing play by Bowe, Tony G already winning the battle against Huff.  Let's finish this drive

by Pauli on Oct 21, 2007 3:11 PM CDT   0 recs

Perhaps "great" was a little premature
But, we're on the board first which is better than the first few weeks.

by Pauli on Oct 21, 2007 3:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good job by Huard
getting that pass off before getting sacked.

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:13 PM CDT   0 recs

First quarter points
count for a lot around here. Nice work by the offense to get some points on the board first.

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:14 PM CDT   0 recs

Boom
Curry was blown up by Page and Law and he still made a ridiculous catch.

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:19 PM CDT   0 recs

i bet we win...
20-14.

i know its late.

i dont care.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 3:22 PM CDT   0 recs

law got burnt on the curry route
he is clearly declining.

i hope he is ok, because our depth at corner sucks, but i also want to see if brackenridge can handle an outside corner job.

that is something else that would be nice to know before the draft, because law is already declining and surtain will in the next year or two.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 3:24 PM CDT   0 recs

Priest
The way those tackles are going in, perhaps this isn't the best game to re-introduce Priest.

by sir eccles on Oct 21, 2007 3:25 PM CDT   0 recs

webb needs to catch that ball...
which forced us to pass on 3rd and 8...

great play by kris wilson to not allow the INT...

tremendous punt by colquitt, and a great play by rashad barksdale on the coverage too.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 3:33 PM CDT   0 recs

Jared Allen
Add another sack. Another notch in the head.

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:35 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm out for a little while
Hopefully be back soon. Carry on the conversation...

by Chris on Oct 21, 2007 3:36 PM CDT   0 recs

like they didnt see that one coming...
we obviously arent going to run priest, but why would we bring him in and not give it to him?

i would have used the screen as a fake, and thrown it downfield.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 3:40 PM CDT   0 recs

FUMBLE!!!!!
game changing play right there.

we need a TD out of the muffed punt...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 3:40 PM CDT   0 recs

Sweet
Come on offense - reward your special teams & defense for their play.  Get seven now!!
You play to win the game!

LJ
Does it seem to anyone that LJ just doesn't play as all out as he used to?  Looks like his motor doesn't run like it used to.

Maybe that's why they brought Priest back.

by telemaster03 on Oct 21, 2007 4:07 PM CDT   0 recs

LJ still not looking like, well, LJ
"Larry will have his best game in terms of yards per carry"
2.25 ypc so far pretty much says it all.
Let's hope he picks up the pace in the 2nd half -- a lot.

STUFFED!!!
im glad we stopped them, two stalls in the red zone (or close to it) could come back to haunt us.

we need to drive down and score again, at least a FG, to make it more than a one possession game...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 4:10 PM CDT   0 recs

donnie almost picked that off.
it would be nice to get another score before half, but i would take a 6-0 lead.

as long as we come out and have a great second half...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 4:17 PM CDT   0 recs

that was the worst series in the history of ever..
we call a TO after we stop them on third down, good call.

then, we want to run the freakin football (WHAT?!?!?!?!?), then go no-huddle (WHAT?!?!?!?!!? x2)

then, to make it even better, we throw the ball over the middle for 2 yards (WHAT?!?!?!?!!? x3), which was probably damons fault.

seriously, damon, when there is 1 20 left and you are trying to drive the ball downfield, DONT throw the ball over the middle to LJ for 3 yards even if he catches it.

throw the ball (gasp!) downfield!!!

im really mad right now.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 4:23 PM CDT   0 recs

I never understand it
How many times do we start drives like that with a running play or a short pass that goes nowhere and eats up a ton of clock before we decide to start driving downfield?

Of course as poorly as the offense is playing against a crappy defense maybe we should have been trying waste more time.

by Pauli on Oct 21, 2007 4:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hey
i cant watch the game due to canada being super gay so please explain dwayne bowes catch to me and keep me updated!!!! thanks guys

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 4:45 PM CDT   0 recs

it was a simple drag route over the middle
bowe was in the left slot and just ran over the middle, he was open  (the middle was cleared out by tony g) and jumped over the corner trying to make a tackle on the right side and ran for another 10 yards after that.

just an amazingly athletic play.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

whew, we got really lucky there.
turk cant make decisions like that any more, but at least the raiders made a dumb penalty later on.

we NEED to score again, i hate winning by less than 7 points. better than losing or tied, of course, but if we can get a 2 possession lead we should be good to go the way this game is going...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 4:57 PM CDT   0 recs

that doesnt really bother me...
sure, we threw an INT on first down, but it was down at the 5 so it is basically like a punt.

plus, we need to take MORE chances downfield, and it was one on one coverage on bowe.

it just doesnt always work out...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:00 PM CDT   0 recs

time to open it up
anybody seen Eddie? At all? And I'm trying to be more positive on here. Have I mentioned our defense is awesome?

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 5:07 PM CDT   0 recs

ahh
tell me about LJs run!!

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:09 PM CDT   0 recs

mike solari...honestly.
i defend you more than just about everyone else, and on 3rd and freaking 12 you call that?

THAT!?!?!?!?!?

and rayner misses the FG...

thats what happens when you play for the FG, things happen.

its all on damon huard and mike solari, i dont even really blame rayner.

sure, it was an embarrassing miss, but if solari and huard actually want to win this game, we go for the TD right there.

and lookee there, momentum changes and they go downfield. and connect.

i give up.

we cant win with stupid play calls and/or decions by the combination of mike solari and damon huard.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:12 PM CDT   0 recs

aaaaaaaaaaaaaa
what is pete stoyanovich up to?

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:13 PM CDT   0 recs

you wanna know how to lose football games?
you play for FGs on 3rd and 12 when you are on the 20.

whatever herm tries and tell you in press conferences, we are definitely NOT playing to win this game.

we were playing for a 9 point lead, a more than one possession lead, and hoping that our defense can keep on stopping them.

mike solari and/or damon huard (whether it was a playcall to LJ or if it was just damons decision; my money is on the former) is 100% to blame for the game being 7-6.

not dave rayner.

not the defense.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:15 PM CDT   0 recs

no excuses for dave rayner
you're an NFL pro, you gotta make 30-yarders.
no if's, and's or but's. i don't care how close they come -- close is 0 points.
and this anemic offense needs every dang point it can get.

And there ya go. We futz around trying -- and not even getting -- field goals, Okland hangs around and boom -- gets the lead on basically two plays.
If everyone is thinking alike then someone isn't thinking. George Patton

by NYChiefsFan on Oct 21, 2007 5:15 PM CDT   0 recs

we
have the shittiest playcallers in the nfl right now. Please explain to me how in the timespan of twominutes we go into the red zone, lose 6 yards, miss a feild goal, then give up a td? Why is it so hard to score in the red zone. Instead of making this a two possesion game, we are now losing. Fire Solari.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:16 PM CDT   0 recs

a pass on first down, what treat

c'mon guys
lots of time left! We're right in this thing! And don't worry! We have Damon Huard! Have you not forgotten he is our best chance to win now? Seriously, though. We've got to go for the kill shot there. Playing not to lose is not going to help us at all. We need to respond. Aaaaand punt.

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 5:20 PM CDT   0 recs

THROW THE BALL DOWN-FREAKIN'-FIELD!!!!!!!
i am 100% sick of our entire offense.

and i am blaming damon huard more than solari.

sure, solari definitely isnt helping, but damon is scared to get hit, plain and simple, and gets rid of it way too early.

can we have croyle now, PLEASE!?!?!?

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:20 PM CDT   0 recs

I honestly
cannot watch this. It is so depressing. I think we have to put brodie in right now so that damon will stop throwing the ball for 5 yards because honestly, any of us can do that. Brodie can throw all the picks he wants as long as they are 30+ yards downfield.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:21 PM CDT   0 recs

exactly.
i was happier with the deep pass he threw downfield to bowe for an INT than the 4 yard completion to samie parker...

croyle would at least make plays downfield, huard cant make plays.

huard just facilitates plays.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

fire solari. bench huard.
this team will never really succeed with those two running the show.

ever.

sure, they will win some games, but that will be mostly because of our amazingness defense (minus those two plays right there) and TG and bowe making tremendous catches.

fire solari. bench huard.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:22 PM CDT   0 recs

true
dat

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:23 PM CDT   0 recs

normally
being down by one with a defense like ours is a pretty good, but with our no-ffense, we are going to hope for a big play from either D-Bo, LJ or T Gon

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:25 PM CDT   0 recs

huard
doesn't seem to be doing any sort of check-downs or anything, he's just throwing it to the primary whether or not there's a play there.

by thehulk on Oct 21, 2007 5:27 PM CDT   0 recs

Jeez!
We need to open it up, go down the field.

by telemaster03 on Oct 21, 2007 5:27 PM CDT   0 recs

how
do you think that we blow this possesion? There is a 65% chance that this is a three and out., according to Ben Statistics.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:28 PM CDT   0 recs

mmmmm....
my words have never tasted so delicious.  i'll eat them any time if it results in a play like that.

by thehulk on Oct 21, 2007 5:28 PM CDT   0 recs

Dwayne
Bowe is way too good for our offense.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:30 PM CDT   0 recs

OMG!!!!! OMG!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!
see what happens when you throw the ball downfield?

good things happen!!!!

GOOD THINGS HAPPEN!!!!

i almost take all the bad things back i said about damon huard.

if he does that more often, i might actually support him.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:30 PM CDT   0 recs

Argh
Wasting timeouts on a game this close.

Shouldn't Huard be comfortable in this offense by now?

He's just too dang hot/cold.

by telemaster03 on Oct 21, 2007 5:33 PM CDT   0 recs

haha
dont get too excited, think about how many times damon has done this and then come right back and throw some brutal throw? He is way to inconsistent right now.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:33 PM CDT   0 recs

DBowe!
Seriously! The guy is our #1 weapon! Welcome to the show!

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 5:34 PM CDT   0 recs

ok, damon is really annoying...
that was an absolutely HORRIBLE pass to tony g on second down.

i mean, LJs was better!

i liked the first down call, see if it would work, but if not OK.

on second down, damon needs to be able to realize that tony g is double covered and decide to throw the ball somewhere else.

right?

or does he only like to throw the ball to tony g if the play calls to throw to tony g...

you can throw to a secondary target, i promise damon.

oh, and we have wasted 2 TO's while doing all of this "work".

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:34 PM CDT   0 recs

we
just got lucky there. Can someone tell me how LJ's pass was, im watching the game on the internet and didnt see it.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:35 PM CDT   0 recs

it was a really good pass.
if he threw it straight to LJ it is picked off, he put it in a place where only tony g could catch it.

i was really impressed...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

we NEED a TD here...
really really really really badly.

i want more than just a FG lead...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:36 PM CDT   0 recs

TD
YEAHHHH!!!!!!

by Picky on Oct 21, 2007 5:38 PM CDT   0 recs

TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY!!!!!
great great great great great run there by LJ.

he gets dogged all the time, but he could have easily been stopped for a negative gain there, he single handedly got in that end zone on will alone.

i like going for 2 too, make it a 7 point game.

throw it to kris wilson after you use tony g to clear out that area.

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:39 PM CDT   0 recs

Hey, LJ can get that 1 yard
He's over a 100 for the day, looking pretty good for him. Damon's on pace for about 215, but our defense is playing well enough for him to win on that. TWSS, you better watch yourself, my jayhawk friend. "Alll urz hatinz will maik us loose the gamez. Go Damon Huard, MVPZ!"

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 5:39 PM CDT   0 recs

i am usually very positive
at least i try to be...

but damon huard is sending me over the edge right now.

although that pass to dwayne bowe and LJ on the 3rd and 5 is making me feel better about him.

still, can we please have croyle in there now?

please?

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Noes
"Noes, cannot has teh Croyle! Huard has teh mvpz!" But seriously, you know as well as I do, as long as Huard's winning, he keeps the gig. We're not Chicago. We don't bench quarterbacks that win, unless our starter is returning from injury. I gotta say, Huard is like that guy that shows up late for meetings, is never prepared, drags down the team, then shows up with pizza and beer for a late night crunch session and then nails the presentation in front of the bosses. Uh-oh. I think the defense is getting tired.

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 5:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

kind of like michael scott
i dont know if you watch the office, it is my favorite show, but michael scott is pretty retarded.

he says all these stupid things, insults everyone at some point or another, wastes countless hours, but nails presentations (and his boss) and so he keeps his job...

this is kind of what damon huard is like, although michael scott makes me laugh and damon huard makes me cry and scream.

but still...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

come on D
you have played magnificent all game, but at least one of those guys has to stay up on lamont jordan.

we need to hold htem to a FG, if anything here, a TD would basically end the game IMO.

i have zero confidence in our teams ability to score again...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:47 PM CDT   0 recs

you
guys have no idea how depressing it is to watch this game on the internet...

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:49 PM CDT   0 recs

You obviously
have not seen the greatness of our two minute offense. Although, in actuality, we actually do play a little better in the two minute drill (today notwithstanding), because Solari has to open it up. And by "open it up" I mean, "only drive LJ straight into the line, and check it down to Kris Wilson on 2 out of every 4 plays instead of 3."

by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 5:49 PM CDT   0 recs

very
good call. He is an expert on driving down the feild and putting TDs on the board.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:51 PM CDT   0 recs

Why?
Why are we so obsessed with pissing away our timeouts on late play calls and ridiculous challenges?

by Pauli on Oct 21, 2007 5:52 PM CDT   0 recs

again, this is a MUST stop right here
if they score a TD here, we lose.

no way we score again, at least without a TO or another HUGE play.

if we hold them to a FG, though, we at the very least will make them travel the length of the field (again) and kick another FG to win.

and i am confident in our D...

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:53 PM CDT   0 recs

YES!!!!!!!!!!
we MUST put the nail in the coffin right here and score right now.

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:55 PM CDT   0 recs

whew!
ok damon, lead this team down the field and get 3 or 4 first downs and we win, game over.

if not, the game is in our D's hands...again.

how about, for once, we just put the game away with our offense?

huh?

by rockchalk on Oct 21, 2007 5:55 PM CDT   0 recs

and by the way
good call herm on trusting your defense and going for two... now on the "off chance" that we dont score here, a feild goal puts them ahead. Atleast we can take a safety i guess...

by Ben S on Oct 21, 2007 5:56 PM CDT   0 recs
