The Kansas City Chiefs Defeat the Oakland Raiders on the Road
Last year in Kansas City against the Raiders, Jarrad Page intercepted an Aaron Brooks pass in the endzone with 32 seconds left to seal the win. Today, Page did the same and intercepted Daunte Culpper with less than a minute left in the game, sealing another win for the Chiefs in Oakland.
Larry Johnson had a similar to game as last week, rushing for 112 yards with 54 of those yards coming on one carry in the third quarter.
The defense played great, with the exception of a total breakdown on two plays that allowed the Raiders to take the lead 7 to 6 in the third quarter. Jared Allen continued to dominate along with Derrick Johnson.
Besides the dramatic finish, I have to say this was probably the most boring game to watch as a viewer. At the same time, its probably the exact type of game Herm Edwards enjoys coaching.
I'm off to write the game recap, which I can assure you will be shorter than usual. Besides the appearance of Priest Holmes, this game didn't reveal much for the Chiefs. Our defense wins our games. The offense again needed a short field to score. The Chiefs scored on drives of 57, 16 and 74 yards. I have to nominate Damon Huard's 58 yard pass to Bowe in the fourth quarter as Huard's all time best play.
Off to write the recap. Glad to have the win and glad to be undefeated in the AFC West.

We are 2-0 in the division - on the road.
Lenny was right, we are going to the Prom with Rosie O'Donnell. But for whatever you think of Rosie, she is MEGA successful by any kind of standards. She makes money, gets her message (however controversial) across & has a happy home life.
Might not be pretty on prom night - BUT.
Who the hell knows?
Can we take Green Bay & Denver at home to go 6-1 in seven games?
Go Chiefs!

two things...
1) as stated innumerable times by me and MAWK, especially in teh game thread, we need to play croyle yesterday. i am sick of this whole damon huard dump-down offense phase, because i am pretty sure that solari feels he cant call passes downfield. becaue except for on broken plays (like the long pass to d bowe) damon either dumps it off or throws it to tony g. at least today that is what he did.
and im really really really really really sick of it...
bench huard. start croyle.
2) i am 98.3% sure that we arent very good this year. good enough to win the division, sure, but not good enough to make a sustained run at the playoffs. however, that 1.7% is telling me that we are 4-1 with jared allen, the one loss coming against a very very very good jacksonville team. it is also telling me that we have dwayne bowe, a gift virtually unwrapped, sitting there waiting to have a real QB who an make throws down field throwing it to him (read: croyle, brodie NOT huard, damon). we just might be able to string together a couple of wins in january, because defense wins championships and ours is damn good.
but still, bench huard and start croyle.

GAWD
Imagine someone looking at your every move in a job & criticizing your every move. There was so much discussion the week of the Indy playoff game last year. The radio stations were full of people saying, "Bench Trent, Play Huard." I mean it was crazy - it was all those people talked about that week.
But we just don't have a say. No that you can't call for it & not that I don't want it - it's just not going to happen. I mean - it's not going to happen.
But Huard's play was awful. Terrible.
Did LJ bench himself early in the 4th quarter. I did not DVR this game, but I want to know. It was on a second & 8, and Priest came in. It was where Priest got his first down.
Anyway - W is a W.
Go Chiefs!

I noticed that about Priest coming in
I'm sure LJ didn't take himself out of the game. If he did, I wouldn't be too happy.

But I also don't think he will be a savior - we are not getting the pass protection we need.
But we'll see! It should be an interesting two weeks, but I guarantee that there will not be a change, so get ready to be frustrated.
Cheers!

Double-edged sword
You can't take out a quarterback with a winning record. You just can't. You risk ruining something tremendous happening. I would point to the Arkansas Razorbacks of last season, and the Patriots of 00 as examples. As much as it pains me to say it, he stays.
I will say that if we do win the West, we have to get the 3 seed. I don't know how, but we'd need to. If things were to continue the way they are now (but do they ever?), the Jags would get the 5. I think we all know how that particular matchup ends. If we can get the three, we'll probably get either the Ravens, Chargers, or Titans. We can beat those teams.
We're a long way from there, of course. I would like to point out that if you take out the 54 yarder from LJ, he averaged 2.5 again. My point is not that LJ sucks, but that we need to give him more chances to break one. Maybe aim for gashes instead of chunks, if that makes any sense.
177 yards for Huard, counting the DBowe 5 o'clock show. That's a 5.7 average.
I'm going to start making "Damon Huard for MVPZ" t-shirts.

I WANNA BUY ONE!!11!!!111one!
now is as good of a time as ever, with the bye and everything, and we have to try SOMETHING to get our offense going.
maybe im blaming huard for everything, but what about this theory...
damon huard cant throw the ball deep. plain and simple. at least with any consistency, sure he made a nice throw to bowe, but earlier in the game he made a pretty bad throw and it was picked off so, yeah. anyways, that means that the safeties arent nearly as worried about getting burnt deep on a play action fake, so they can come up in run support. it is awfully hard to run the ball for consistent positive yardage when you have an offensive line as bad as ours when there are only 7 guys in the box, much less 8 or 9 or even 10.
croyle, while throwing more INT's, sure, at least has the tools to make the safeties pay here and there for coming up to stop LJ, and that would create more room for LJ. from my very non-playing-football standpoint, it seems that LJ is doing a good job of making one guy miss, but at that point there are already 3 or 4 more guys in his face. but, if the safeties cant creep up, LJ will have enough room to make a guy miss and scamper for more long runs.
plus, more importantly, the runs will consistently be in the 3-4 yard range, not the 1-2 yard range.

Disagree
From an outsiders perspective, we have won 4 out of 5 with Huard at the helm. Can't imagine him getting benched now. I'm not saying whether I agree or disagree, I'm just saying this isn't as good of a time as ever.
Look at Grossman with the Bears last year. He played the whole year and they still made the Super Bowl. If Grossman stayed, Huard will stay. Do you think Herm has spoken at all with his buddy Lovie about their similar situations?

finally someone talking sense
Croyle didn't show me much in preseason to get excited about.
maybe he will be the first Chiefs QB draftee this century who doesn't suck, i dunno.
but more importantly, why do we think bringing in a rookie QB now is going to have any good effect down the winter stretch of games?
rookie QB's are always sexy ... until they have to produce consistently in games that count.
by NYChiefsFan on Oct 21, 2007 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
essentially
It's that he'll make us better next year. And the year after that, and the year after that. And if he's not going to do that, we'd rather find out sooner rather than later so we can either draft, trade for or sign a QB that will.
For some of us diehards, this team doesn't seem to have what it takes to achieve the goal, which is to win a playoff game, and work towards a Super Bowl. And we know they're in first place. And we're thrilled for that. And we're rooting for them, as we did today.
But we want what's best for the franchise.
Can I get a roll call of folks that think that Damon Huard, at 34, averaging 5.7 yards per completion, with a 7-6 TD-INT ratio, is what's best for the Chiefs franchise's goal of winning a SuperBowl?
by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 21, 2007 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly.
however, what isnt a legitimate arguement is that huard is the better qb of the future.
and, as me and mawk and a couple of other croyle-supporters have said a billion times, this is a GREAT qb draft (i really really really want andre woodson; he will be better than brohm IMO) and if croyle isnt the guy, we need to take advantage.
so, to know whether croyle is for real or not, we have to play him THIS YEAR. and the sooner the better, so we can see him for as long and in as many situations as possible...

Huard vs. Croyle
I've pretty much resigned myself to just enjoying the season as it is.
What I'm more afraid of than anything is that the Chiefs get to the playoffs and actually win a game before getting smashed by the Pats or Colts.
Then we'll be dealing with this Huard vs. Croyle QB controversy AGAIN next preseason. Not enough Pepto Bismol in the world for that.
by DJ on Oct 21, 2007 10:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm in a different place
I can totally understanding just resigning yourself to this season and wanting to enjoy it.
I do feel bad that we're all calling for our qb's benching after we win. I feel dirty about that.
As I've said a million times, though, God, I want to contend for a SuperBowl.

Thatswhatshesaid -- good call on the Page pick.
MAWK -- Today's pick was the first and only that Huard has thrown this year that wasn't a tipped ball or a catch/hit/coughed-up ball.

welcome back d thomas
no, we didn't loose this game.
and we're going to print up "Damon Huard for MVPz" t-shirts. Do you wear a Medium, Large, or LOL?
look, the argument is still out on Huard, and it's a debate worthy of the greatest fans in pro football.
But even the Huard die hards are starting to waiver. You cannot tell me that you honestly think he played BETTER yesterday. He threw for 177. On the Raiders. If you take away dBowe's superhuman abilities play-of-the game, the man is averaging like, .000000000005 yards per completion. Brady can throw all the picks he wants. He'll also score points. And if he doesn't, we can put Huard back in! Does anyone really think that the locker room is divided at this point? They're professionals. They just want to win. And if you ask Tony and the Show, i'm pretty sure what they'd tell you.
"Um... I love Damon. Great guy. He's our starter. I don't get paid to make those decisions. What? Croyle's starting? Oh, thank Christ, someone that can throw the ball more than 5 yards! Pro Bowl, here I come!"
by Ridiculous Matt on Oct 22, 2007 9:15 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
ok, d thomas. two things...
- if our veterans want to win a super bowl before they retire, then croyle should be playing right now. no way we win one with damon huard at the helm, and croyle does need developing time before he is ready. he could be ready next season if he starts playing pretty soon...
- croyle is much much more mobile than damon huard. croyle could run for a couple of yards, and i have a feeling he wouldnt mind letting it loose deep down field.

I wish to God
I wish I watched Chiefs games in your universe, D. I really do.
And no one, NO ONE, is talking about needing Croyle to win a championship. It's that we're not going to win one with Huard, and we need to find out IF Croyle can be that guy for us.
I guess you play to not lose the game, though.
You're right, though. Between our defence and our MVPz QB, we'll never loose in the playoffs.

re: Huard's late game sack
That sack wasn't a bad (or good) thing. It ran time off the clock. And, since you don't believe Huard is a play maker, what did you expect to happen if he passed it? Incomplete or intercepted, right?
BTW, I'm not claiming that Huard is a play maker, just kind of playing devil's advocate here.

uh-huh.
and everyone talks about how damon huard "doesnt make mistakes", but he essentially threw 3 INTERCEPTIONS yesterday.
he really only threw one, i know, i watched the game, but he threw two passes straight to the defender. kris wilson made a great play to break one up, and tony gonzalez made a great play later on to prevent an INT.
so, they are both turnover-prone, if you will, but croyle can make plays. damon likes getting sacked to "run out the clock"...
