Scouting the Raiders

Stealing an idea from our main man Direckshun at Chiefs Planet, here's an open thread for scouting this weekend's opponent, the Oakland Raiders.

Make this thread the repository for everything we need to know about the Raiders. Info on Culpepper, their running game, secondary, defensive line, linebackers, etc. can all go in here.

Lets start the discussion off with your general impression of the Raiders so far this season. The phrase I would use to describe them is "flying under the radar". They're better than everyone expects and will more than likely break their losing streak in the division this year.

The Chiefs seemingly always have major issues with running or mobile quarterbacks. Daunte Culpepper has certainly lost a step over the last couple of years but he's light years ahead of Kerry Collins. Peruse Silver and Black Pride for more info.

To get started
Stats on the Raiders:

20th in total offense
26th in yards allowed on defense
29th in passing offense
3rd in rushing offense
13th in pass defense
28th in rush defense

The Raiders haven't really played any high quality opponents either. They've played Detroit, Denver, Cleveland, San Diego and Miami. On paper, this team isn't very good.

LJ needs to get going
Asomugha and Washington are two very good corners that can shut down the passing game pretty quickly.  I have a feeling LJ and TG will be big this game.

If we can stop the run
then we win this game...unfortunately, it seems like our run defense, which was a strength last season, has slipped a bit (though our pass defense is much improved).  I wonder if this has anything to do with Harris and Edwards being better coverage LB's...(not to knock their game against the run).  First one to 100 yds and a rushing TD should win this game.  Speaking of, I just heard some craziness on the radio at work that Holmes is going to play against the Raiders.  Can anyone confirm that?

by PVChiefsfan on Oct 17, 2007 9:36 AM CDT reply actions

Can't confirm
And I would be very surprised if Holmes came back this week and actually played in an NFL game. Maybe in two weeks, but not this week.

Our run defense #s have looked good
the past few years because our pass defense has been so bad.  Everyone passed against us.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 17, 2007 10:29 AM CDT up reply actions

No
we made everybody pass against us because we stuffed the run...very few teams want to throw deep passes. You risk INT's, sacks, injuries to the QB,  pass blocking is usually harder and more dangerous to O linemen, etc.

I think I heard 610 report that Herm said, "he wouldn't rule Priest out of the Oakland game."
You play to win the game!

I can't imagine he plays
If LJ needs a few games to get back into shape after missing only the preseason, I would be amazed if Priest is able to go this weekend.

The rundown on the RBs
Lamont Jordan actually started to produce this year. He was looking good, for the first time since he signed with Oakland.

Whoops.

Back pain. Chronic back pain. The MRI's are coming up negative, which has to be frustrating. He's healthy enough to play, but not healthy enough to play well.

Just in Fargas, on the other hand, has played great in relief. He's averaging 6 yards a carry. He's got a great burst of speed and can get into open space well.

If last week was about the Dline and secondary stepping up to stop the pass, this week it's about the linebackers stepping up to make sure the running backs and Culpepper don't get into the next level.

Did I just make this up?
For some reason I thought Dominic Rhodes went to the Raiders this offseason, but I haven't heard anything about him.  I think I remember him getting a DUI, so he'd have to sit out the first 4 games, but shouldn't he be playing now, or am I thinking of the wrong team?

raiders
weve got to stop thier rushing attack. it seems like we have the personnel to stop the rush but were over persuing. we must play action well to win this game. the raiders want to win this game more than any this season!

raiders
have one of the most underrated LB in the league in Kirk Morrison. He is a monster. I personally think  that he is a top 10 easy LB in this league.

I dont think the raiders D line will be too controling, but there LB and secondary definetly have the talent to give us more than enough trouble.

As for their offense, they are far too inconsistent (like ours) to really look like an actual threat to run up the score on us, especially the way our defense is playing. We should be looking for a cose win by the chiefs, probably about a 10 poin win like 17-7 chiefs. I bet d-bos going to have a good day against their corners just because of his size and style of play.

D-Bowe v. Asomugha
Asomugha is one of the biggest corners in the league at 6'2" and should be as physical as Bowe is.  Don't think he's going to have a big day.

TG will be huge this game.

Culpepper is the only one who scares me in that game.

Forgot where I heard this first
But if you're listed as the backup to Josh McCown on the depth chart, you are not allowed to have your own touchdown dance.

Read Option?
I swear I saw them running the read-option against Miami, Vince Young at Texas style. Couldn't this work pretty well against our aggressive DEs?

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Oct 17, 2007 11:57 AM CDT reply actions

That would be crazy
NFL players are too strong, fast and smart to run the option against them.  It's too big of a risk.  I would love if Daunte and co. started running any option against us.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 18, 2007 5:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree
over-aggressiveness by Hali or Allen hurts us on naked bootlegs (not so much as in recent years though) but with our speed at linebacker, running an option would be a horrible idea.

by PVChiefsfan on Oct 18, 2007 7:17 AM CDT up reply actions

what we need
we need to spread the field well to win this game. the crowd will play a factor and larry may have trouble running up the middle. Play action will kill the raiders if we can get off a few good runs.
go chiefs

raiders
The chiefs should be able to win this one if they just dont fumble the ball like they did last week. And I'm thinking that fabian washington will be playing dwayne, or atleast when the two are lined up, i dont see d-bo losing that. Look at all of the corners he has been up against already. Nathan Vasher/Daniel Manning (flea flicker TD) Quentin Jammer (who is have a good season except for against D-bo) Cedric Griffen, Rasheed Mathis (one of the best corners in the game). Personally, I think that the two raiders corners what be that big of a problem as long as dwayne is thrown to.
