Priest Holmes Put on PUP; 2006 Up in the Air

In an anticipated move on Friday, Priest Holmes was put on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list.

Holmes' options now are:

  • Get himself ready to play by the end of preseason

  • Stay on the PUP list until Week 7 and hope to play

  • Sit out the season and more than likely retire

I get the feeling like Holmes will not be ready by the end of preseason, he'll hope to play by Week 7 but will not be able to do so.  I certainly hope the Minister of Offense can come back at least at 80% healthy and attempt to rush for at least 700 yards.

that sucks
Holmes has been an animal on the field. With head and neck injuries it's always better to be safe and careful rather then paralyzed. Hopefully he gets back on the field if he can safely do so.

I just get the feeling
that Holmes' neck injury is a lot worse than he's letting on.  That hit Merriman put on him was pretty sickening.

He needs to think of his family too!
His retirement pay is set. He has insurance for disability ongoing, probably being paid two thirds his salary not counting any private coverage. Is it worth his health and risk to his family to be a part time running back?
He knows that LJ has the reins. With Herm Edwards substitution style Im sure that he would face third and short more often than not. He my be called in for goal line situations due to his success historically. That is alot of hard contact if there was any risk at all.
Spinal chord injuries are nothing to mess with. Hey, perhaps he will come back in week 16 and/or for a couple calls in a playoff game or two, just to "earn" that ring? Perhaps? It would be a just, memorable send off for the  hall of fame running back!

We are in the market
Its just a SKINNY MARKET  right now. With the progress of team training camps across the league no one is willing to part with an insurace policy of a running back. Injuries and trades as well as evaluation of new draftees will sort out the market and monetary demands will influence running back availability in the coming weeks. Sit tight.
